Beacon Poet Laureate

This spring, the creation of a Beacon Poet Laureate position was approved by Beacon
Mayor Randy Casale and the Beacon City Council. Alison Herrero and Vickie Raabin will oversee the selection process.  Applicants for this two-year position (January 1, 2013-December 31, 2014) must live in the Beacon City School District.

"We're excited that we'll have a Beacon Poet Laureate who will act as an advocate for poetry in our community," said Alison Herrero, Adult Services Librarian at the Howland Public Library. Vickie Raabin, Owner of Miss Vickie's Music, stated
,"This is something I am very proud of. I feel that this is another art form we should promote in Beacon."

The responsibilities of the Beacon Poet Laureate will include poetry readings at select government and community events, as well as the creation of a poem specific to the 2013 Centennial Celebration of Beacon.

Click here for an Application and an Overview and Summary of Expected Responsibilities or pick them up at the Howland Public Library, 313 Main Street, Beacon, NY.  Deadline is August 31, 2012. Beacon's first Poet Laureate will be announced on November 1, 2012. For more information, contact Alison Herrero at 831-1134.

HPL Board Welcomes Ken Straus

On July 10th, Fishkill Town Court Judge Robert Rahemba (at right) administered Oaths of Office to newly-elected trustee Ken Straus, and to FY 2012-13 officers President Karen Palumbo, Esq., Vice-President Dale Leifeste, Secretary Prudence Posner, and Treasurer Shawn Waldron. David Lemon and Peter Ullian also serve on the library board.  In late July, members of the HPL Board will interview the six wonderful candidates who expressed interest in filling two vacant trustee seats.  Library board meetings are held in the Community Room on the first Tuesday of each month at 7 PM, with exceptions of August (no meeting) and November (meeting changed from Election Day to the 13th).   All are welcome!
