Forum on New Jersey Public Media

When: Monday, November 14th, 4 pm - 7 pm Where: Rutgers Institute for Information Policy & Law, Rutgers University School of Law, Camden Register at riipl@camlaw.rutgers.eduDirections to Campus New Jersey's transition this past summer from a state-owned public broadcasting network to new privately-operated public media networks presents new challenges and opportunities. Conference participants will hear what forward-thinking public media companies are doing to serve their local markets, what information needs the residents of New Jersey have, and how the three new operators of New Jersey's public broadcasting stations are planning to serve them.

Charter Schools, Choice and the Future of Public Education

When: Wednesday, November 16, 7:30 pm Where: Englewood Hospital & Medical Centers, Auditorium, 350 Engle Street, Englewood (use main entrance) Free and open to the publicThe League of Women Voters of Northern Valley (LWVNV) in conjunction with the Northern New Jersey Community Foundation will present an educational forum, Charter Schools, Choice and the Future of Public Education. The forum is part of LWVNV's participation in a nationwide League of Women Voters study of the "Role of the Federal Government in Public Education". Stan Karp, Director of the Secondary Reform Project, of the Education Law Center will speak about the various issues surrounding charter schools and their impact upon public education. He will review the history of voucher and charter proposals and address current and pending federal and state issues. An opportunity for questions and discussion will be provided.

Free Workshop: Best Practices for Using the Open Public Records Act and the Open Public Meetings Act

When: Thursday, November 17, 6:30 pm Where: Eagleton Institute of Politics, 191 Ryders Lane, New Brunswick Parking: Free parking for guests in the Eagleton Institute Parking Lot and the Douglass Campus Parking Deck Reserve Your SeatFree and open to the public The New Jersey Hyperlocal News Association (NJHNA) will host a free reporter's training workshop on November 17th -- giving reporters and citizen journalists tips and tools for using the Open Public Records Act (OPRA) and Sunshine Law. These two laws are the public's greatest tool in observing and holding accountable local government. This session will go over your legal rights, best practices for obtaining "hard to find" records, and stories that can be generated from public records.
