First, I want to say thank you to everyone who supported my campaign and, especially, thank you to everyone who volunteered their time. Second, this was a hard-fought five month campaign. My offer to serve this District resonated with nearly 40% of the voters in this election. I cannot adequately express my gratitude to the nearly 81,000 citizens that wanted to take me up on that offer. Upon closer inspection, this race broke pretty clearly along regional lines, as follows:
- Charlotte - Of 107 total votes, we won 65%
- Glades - Of 1,736 total votes, we won 46%
- Lee - Of 103,295 total votes, we won 52%
- Palm Beach - Of 98,755 total votes, we won 27%
I called Senator Aronberg late last evening to congratulate him on his re-election. I can only hope that he will continue to support positions he espoused during the campaign, such as offshore oil exploration, a Lee County senate seat, and a more fair and equal tax system.
Certainly, one of the largest issues in Southwest Florida was the proposed lease of Alligator Alley. Although I was extremely disappointed in my opponent misrepresenting my record on the issue, I expect that he will continue to fight against any proposal which is not in the best interest of Florida.
