Remodeling Tip: Take Advantage of Energy Tax Credits
|
Now's the time to take advantage of up to $1,500 in Energy Tax credits on high efficiency home improvements including windows, doors, roofs, insulation, high efficiency HVAC systems and other Energy Star products. These credits are available on qualifying products installed between January 1, 2009 and December 31, 2010.
By installing energy-efficient products, you'll enjoy multiple benefits including lower home energy bills, increased indoor comfort, and reduced air pollution - in addition to actually lowering the amount of federal income taxes that you pay to Uncle Sam.
What is a tax credit? You don't receive an income tax credit when you buy the product, like an instant rebate. Instead, you claim the credit on your federal income tax return. The credit then increases the tax refund you receive or decreases the amount you have to pay. In general, a tax credit is more valuable than a similar tax deduction because it reduces the tax you pay, dollar-for-dollar, by 100 percent of the amount of the credit.
