January is National Blood Donor Month
Since 1970, National Blood Donor Month has been observed each January to educate everyone about the importance of being a blood donor and the impact blood donations can have on patients who need blood.
We'd like to thank blood donors for their generosity and we encourage everyone to roll up their sleeves to donate blood or platelets and help save a life on a regular basis.
The Red Cross collects and processes more than 40% of the nation's blood supply - approximately 6 million units of blood each year from nearly 4 million volunteer blood donors. These units are then manufactured into about 9 million transfusable blood products for patients at approximately 3,000 hospitals and transfusion centers across the country.

Holiday Fires Strike Cape Fear Residents
Red Cross volunteers responded to four home fires in the Cape Fear area over the Christmas holiday and one New Year's Eve fire in Wilmington. And as if this holiday excitement wasn't enough there were four fires in Columbus County this past weekend making it a busy new year for Red Cross workers.
The Cape Fear Chapter ensured that the residents affected by these fires had a warm bed to sleep in during the holidays and into the new year. In addition to offering the families a safe place to stay, the Red Cross provided financial assistance with food, clothing, shoes, and other basic necessities. |

Holiday Giving Campaign Recap
Thanks to the generous support of our donors we are proud to announce that we have met and exceeded our $20,000 matching goal gifts.
In November we shared the exciting news that two charitable donors, the Harms Family Foundation and Monica C. Watson, had each pledged $20,000 to the local Red Cross for the 2011 Holiday Giving Campaign. With these pledges on the table, we challenged the community to help us raise $20,000 that would be be matched twice, dollar for dollar.
Not only did we succeed in hitting that mark but we surpassed it! Final results will be posted next month, so stay tuned! Thank you all for helping us meet our 2011 Holiday Giving goal!
