Keep Your Thanksgiving Fire-Free
Dry turkey. Watery mashed potatoes. Family feuds. Beyond these holiday "hazards," what makes the most trouble over Thanksgiving is a real hazard: cooking fires.
According to the National Fire Protection Association, cooking is the leading cause of home fires and home fire injuries. Unfortunately, Thanksgiving is prime time for these accidents, since many people break out the pots and pans for the holiday.

Red Cross Enters Fittest Execs Challenge
Cape Fear Chapter staff are taking part in the Fittest Execs challenge which runs from October through January. With the help of personal trainers Crystal Gentry of Urban Fitness and Kevin DeMarco of DeMarco Studio, our team of five Red Crossers are embarking on this journey to lose weight, get fit and improve our overall health.
Fitness assessments and blood tests were taken to gauge our current level of health and will be taken again in January to see how much we have improved.
Our first training session with Crystal was quite the shock for much of the team - there was no shortage of aching muscles the next couple days. One staffer said she was so sore she had to walk up the stairs sideways with her 3 year old holding her hand! We consider this one of many more accomplishments to come and look forward to working with Crystal and Kevin to get fit! |

Testing of the National Emergency Alert System on November 9
The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) and the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) will be conducting the first-ever nationwide Test of the Emergency Alert System (EAS) on Wednesday, November 9, 2011 at 2:00 PM (Eastern).
The National-level EAS is a public alert and warning system that enables the President of the United States to address the American public during extreme emergencies. Similar to local EAS tests that are conducted frequently, the Nationwide EAS Test will involve broadcast radio and television stations, cable television, satellite radio and television services and wire line providers across all states and territories.
This event also serves as a reminder that everyone should establish an emergency preparedness kit and emergency plan for themselves, their families, communities, and businesses. Emergency planning information is available on the Emergency Management website.
For more information visit the Nationwide EAS Test website. |
