October is Fire Prevention Month and the American Red Cross is encouraging people to take steps to lessen the risk of a fire in their home.
According to the National Fire Protection Association, there are between 350,000 and 400,000 house fires in the United States every year. Home fires are the biggest disaster threat to families in this country, above floods and hurricanes.
That's why the American Red Cross is encouraging people to remember two key fire safety steps: installing smoke alarms and developing a fire escape plan.

- 10/8 Safety Day at Home Depot in Myrtle Grove (9am-3pm)
- 10/10 General Electric United Way Agency Fair (11am-1pm)
- 10/22 Airport Disaster Exercise at ILM (7am-12pm)
- 10/25 Seniors Helping Seniors and their Caregivers at the Brunswick Center in Southport (9:45am-3pm)
- 10/26 General Electric Military Forum (12-3pm)

200 Club for Local Businesses - Are you in?
 What is the 200 Club?
The 200 Club is a program for local businesses that support the humanitarian mission of the Cape Fear Chapter of the American Red Cross. The 200 Club provides funding for the costs associated with all Red Cross programs and services such as disaster relief, military support services, health and safety education and support of area blood drives. The 200 Club has 200 memberships available at a cost of $200.00 per membership per year.
Who can join?
Any local business in Brunswick, Columbus, Duplin, New Hanover and Pender counties may join the 200 Club.
How do I sign up?
Click here for the 200 Club Commitment form.
Fill out the form and submit your payment. Once your application is received, you will be mailed your window stickers and donation recognition letter.

FREE Baby Baskets for Military Families | |
Do you know a military family expecting a baby?
Red Cross has teamed up with volunteers and businesses to provide a "Basket for Baby". If you know someone who may be a candidate for a baby basket, please email Wendy Flynn or call 910-762-2683 x328. Quantities are limited and on a "first come, first served basis". |

Holiday Mail for Heroes | |
The American Red Cross and Pitney Bowes Inc. are teaming up to deliver holiday cards to service members, their families and veterans, many of whom will be far from home this holiday season.
The Holiday Mail for Heroes program provides Americans the opportunity to send holiday greetings to our men and women of the U.S. Armed Forces, our nation's veterans and their families.
In addition to holiday cards, the Cape Fear Chapter will also be packaging trays of cookies, candies and other goodies to deliver to service members in the community. We will need volunteers bakers who can donate some yummy items. For more information and to volunteer for the Holiday Mail for Heroes program please contact Wendy Flynn. |
