St. Vincent's emerges from bankruptcy

SUNY Downstate begins layoffs
The financially troubled hospital, which had been expected to downsize, has not yet detailed the number of employees to be let go. Meanwhile, an audit of the Brooklyn health system is due by the end of August.
With penalties for preventable hospital readmissions looming, recently released Medicare data shows that U.S. hospitals aren't making much progress in lowering readmission rates. While this is not great news for hospitals, it presents an opportunity for post-acute providers.
Medicaid patients are more than three times as likely to visit emergency departments as privately insured patients, but visits are generally not for routine care.
Long term care liability loss rates and claim severity reached an eight-year high and are expected to grow steadily in 2013 against a backdrop of health care provider budget constraints and uncertainty about health care reform, according to Aon Risk Solutions.
