| Chem Rx, Pharmaceutical Provider, Enters Bankruptcy
May 11 - Chem Rx Corp., a provider of pharmacy services to nursing homes and correctional facilities, sought bankruptcy protection from creditors to restructure on Tuesday, a day after the company's lenders filed an action in a New York State court to prohibit its use of cash that was subject to the lenders' liens.
Chem Rx has been in default under certain loans since the beginning of 2009 and has operated without an effective forbearance agreement since the end of June, Chief Financial Officer Gary Jacobs said in court papers.
In its Chapter 11 petition, which also included five affiliates, Chem Rx listed assets of $169.7 million and total debt of $178.3 million. Among the company's largest unsecured creditors are AmerisourceBergen of Pittsburgh, owed $9.55 million, and Anda Generics Inc. of Atlanta, owed $6.17 million, according to the court petition.
Jacobs said although Chem Rx's businesses remained strong, the company was too highly leveraged and lacked adequate liquidity to sustain operations over the long term without a restructuring. Chem Rx said in a statement it hired investment banker Lazard Middle Market LLC to help with the restructuring.
The case is In re: Chem Rx Corp, U.S. Bankruptcy Court, District of Delaware, (Wilmington).
Assisted Living - A Danger to the Community? So much for the stereotype of those nice, welcoming Minnesotans. In Woodbury, Minn., a Twin Cities suburb, a proposed assisted living facility that would specialize in dementia care has run into angry opposition from some neighbors in a surrounding residential development called Stonemill Farms. This is not, in itself, unheard of. Concerns about things like parking and traffic do sometimes surface when communities contemplate new assisted living projects. What's unusual about Settler's Pointe, a 45-unit facility that would replace a mostly empty retail strip, is that a number of its adversaries describe it as a potential threat to their children. Here is Minneapolis Star Tribune columnist Jon Tevlin's description of the controversy...full article

Administrators...represent the head of each nursing home. As Nursing Home Week comes to an end I would like to thank all the administrators who take the time out of their day to recognize their employees and value the care that their residents receive. Administrators have a difficult job balancing not only the budget but the day to day operations and oversight of state and federal regulations in an organization. Each day holds different challenges and obstacles that the administrator is responsible for solving. Ultimately, it is their license hanging on the wall.
In 1967, Congress passed legislation mandating that all nursing home administrators be licensed in their respective states. This legislation grew out of a perception that nursing home administrators were not well trained. A good administrator is active, accessible and visible in a facility. When you enter a nursing facility your observation of the appearance of the residents, staff members and environment are indicative of the leadership and management of the administrator. It's simple. You, the administrator set the standard for your facility. The answer is elementary. Ask yourself what kind of administrator are you?.....

When Foreclosure Threatens Elder-Care Homes Because of a loophole in the law, owners of residential-care facilities for the elderly - who often double as administrators - do not have to tell their residents or the residents' families if they miss mortgage payments or are on the brink of foreclosure. An analysis of data by The New York Times shows that more than 100 elder-care homes in the Bay Area were under foreclosure in the last six months, and that as many as 700 residents - who often need help with bathing, eating and other daily activities - may have faced eviction...full article
New Ways to Treat Pain Tricking the Brain, Blocking the Nerves in Patients When All Else Has Failed - Some 76.5 million Americans, or about 26% of all adults, suffer from chronic pain, generally defined as any pain that lasts more than six months. Medical experts say the condition can be as debilitating as many severe diseases, leaving the patient exhausted and unable to carry on with many everyday activities. The new therapies, some of which have been borrowed from the field of anesthesiology, mostly share a goal of preventing pain signals from reaching the brain. Implantable devices, such as the one Ms. Weinberg received, are intended to stimulate nerves to mask pain. Nerve stimulation also can be achieved by attaching electrodes on the outside of the skin, for instance at the knee, to deliver a low-voltage electrical current. full article

Build a roadmap for meaningful use Whether your organization has health information technologies (HIT) in
place today or preparations for meaningful use are just beginning, the
time is now to understand your environment, locate where patient
information exists today and prioritize your needs. Care providers are
incented to adopt meaningful use by 2015; after which date Medicare
reimbursements will be reduced. Enterprise data management is
complex and even further complicated by the data quality and political
governance challenges that arise when organizations attempt to share or
exchange information...full article
