Our Golf Outings are the BEST around!
Thanks to Coldwell Banker agents for organizing another successful golf outing for Silent Observer
On June 28, 2010 107 golfers participated in the Coldwell Banker AJS-Schmidt golf outing to benefit Silent Observer. We received great feedback from the golfers and the outing raised $13,500 for Silent Observer.
But most of all, Silent Observer could not have organized such a great event alone. The golf committee is made up of Coldwell Banker realtors who generously volunteered their time and talent with Silent Observer to make this golf event one of the best around!
Silent Observer is very appreciative of the companies and individuals that donated prizes for our silent auction and raffle and we'd like to thank the following sponsors for their generous support of this event: Coldwell Banker AJS-Schmidt, Gold Star Mortgage Financial Group, Clear Stream Title, Kuiper Orlebeke, Approved Fire Protection, Dean Transportation, EPS Security, The Closing Office, Transnation Title, American Home Shield and B&B Beer Distributors.

Director's Download...
Some believe crime pays. Sadly those who steal from us, damage our property, rob our stores, or sell drugs to our friends, all believe it's worth violating a stranger for some material or emotional gain. It causes us to be scared, tentative, violated and unsure of ourselves and our surroundings. As I look back at some of the crimes solved this year because of Silent Observer tipsters, it appears some of these crimes could have been prevented. So I want to use this column to remind readers of a few basic crime prevention tips that might save you from someone with criminal intent.
- Lock your doors and close your garage, especially at night and when you are away. The man allegedly charged with setting nine fires in a southeast neighborhood in the middle of the night only went into open garages. If we remember to make it hard for strangers to gain entry into our home, they will go on their way to find an easier target. Also perpetrators don't want to be seen or heard so using your outside lights at night is paramount.
- If you have a remote for your vehicle with an alarm function, sleep with it nearby. That way if you hear someone trying to break in, simply hit the alarm button, which will surely wake up your neighbors and scare the perpetrator away.
- Lock your car and hide your valuables. Don't tempt someone by leaving your GPS on your dashboard or your phone, wallet and laptop on your seat. Put them away either in your trunk or cover them with a blanket so they aren't in full view.
- Get to know your neighbors. That way, you will know when something looks suspicious in your neighborhood like people, cars and sounds that don't belong. Our neighborhoods are much safer when people decide to pick up the phone and report suspicious situations to police. Take action by carefully observing, recording what you see and reporting it immediately, not tomorrow, but immediately to police. Remember, the police would rather be called and not needed, than needed and not be called.
- In the spirit of the season, be neighborly. Shovel the snow off of a neighbor's driveway and walkway and offer to pick up the mail and newspaper for those on vacation. Help them make their home looked lived-in while away.
- There is a great tool that will keep Grand Rapids residents up-to-date as to crimes occurring in your neighborhood. Simply go to www.crimemapping.com to sign up to receive daily email alerts on crimes that may affect your area.
Here's to a happy and safe holiday season. Blessings to you all!

BUSTED!
Because of YOUR tips our streets are safer and dangerous criminals have been removed from our streets. Below is a listing of some of the crimes that have been solved thanks to anonymous Silent Observer tipsters.
- A serial arsonist was arrested after a tipster called Silent Observer on a hunch. This suspect allegedly set nine garage fires which spread into some of the homes ultimately terrorizing an entire southeast neighborhood. The estimated property damage is at $500,000 but it could have skyrocketed and lives could have been lost had this tipster not come forward.
- Police, acting on a Narcotics tip to Silent Observer, found a suspect in possession of five illegal guns and two pounds of Marijuana. The suspect was charged with Possession with Intent to Deliver Marijuana, Maintaining a Drug House and Felony Firearm. Five illegal guns removed from our streets in one sweep!
- Three burglars working the Cascade and Ada areas were stealing anything of value from vehicles. Investigators had video footage of one of them using a stolen credit card and an alert tipster identified the suspect leading to three arrests.
- A grandfather who allegedly molested his four-and nine-year-old grandchildren was on the run. A tip to Silent Observer led police right to him.
- No one knew a young special needs woman was being molested by her father until a tip came in and uncovered this horrific crime.
- A suspect who committed two armed robberies at a CVS Pharmacy and Mel's Party Store was identified and arrested thanks to a Silent Observer tipster. The suspect stole over $20,000 worth of prescription medications from CVS.

Silent Observer Works to Garner Your Support
Hopefully after reading our success stories listed in this newsletter, you will decide that Silent Observer is:
- A worthwhile organization dedicated to keeping our residents safe.
- A program vitally important to the community because it helps victims of crime find justice and assists police in removing criminals from our streets.
- A program relied on by law enforcement because a good tip saves police hundreds of manpower hours and often provides police a glimpse at new activity on our streets.
- An innovative program that guarantees our users anonymity and offers tipsters the ability to call and report crime-solving information 24/7 by phone, web or text message.
- A donor-funded Non-Profit worthy of community support.
Silent Observer isn't all that aggressive in asking for donations...we don't send mailings that flood your mailboxes monthly or hire telemarketers to call you at home. We don't have a large staff or large expenses but it does cost about $130,000 to keep this program running. And since we are not part of a police agency and no larger bureaucracy pays our bills, we need to come to you, quietly and respectfully, to ask for your support.
If you are in the habit of making year-end contributions, would you please consider Silent Observer as a charity to support? Since Silent Observer is 38 years old, we are hoping that residents might be willing to donate $38 to Silent Observer as a way of acknowledging our history of removing dangerous criminals from our streets. Our goal is lofty....we'd like receive 1000 donations of $38. You can help by clicking on the Forward to a Friend link at the bottom of this newsletter to send this to your friends and people in your business network who may be interested in our mission and our work. This kind of financial support is vital to the health of our program and allows us to maintain programs like Fast 50, Text A Tip, our web site, and rewards.
Check out membership information at: http://www.silentobserver.org/donation.asp. You may donate on our secure site by using your credit card or you can print out the donation form and mail it to Silent Observer, PO Box 230321, Grand Rapids, MI 49523.
