Ah, it's spring, with the cherry blossoms and the longer days and the sunny weather and the... taxes. It's appropriate that we're sending this out on tax-filing day because our theme on the COATS blog this month has been taxes, especially in terms of COATS and our new versions.

And yes, there are new versions. For just as spring is the season of new hatchlings, this year it's also the season of freshly-hatched updates of COATS Staffing Software, including an extra-new update for everyone who does business in Pennsylvania.

We hope this information will help you get through the icky, tax-y part of April so you can enjoy this beautiful weather.

Thanks for being part of our family,

New Versions of COATS Staffing Software!

COATSsqlWe're proud and delighted to announce the latest versions of COATS Staffing Software!

COATSsql version 4.3.4 offers more flexibility in transactions, greater speed in reports and the ability to work with Microsoft Word .docx files instead of having to save or open .doc files.

COATS Standard version 9.0.7 has numerous minor updates to reflect state tax changes, further year additions in GMGP reporting and the fact that almost nobody has a floppy drive anymore.

What's new in COATSsql version 4.3.4:

  • Purchase order numbers in Edit Transactions can now be up to 25 characters long, instead of 15.
  • Enhanced Tax automatically attaches CADI to local table for firms doing business in California.
  • Version 4.3.5 recognizes .docx files with Contact Notes for Employees, Clients, Banks and AP.
  • Firms doing business in Pennsylvania can create a Local Mag Media in Payroll and access updated Local Quarterly Magnetic Media and Reports.
  • The Michigan Mag Media list has been updated so you canto create a Mag Media File in Payroll.
  • Create Multiple Entry Transactions in General Ledger has been modified to allow users to save work after posting.
  • Staffing and General Ledger reports have been enhanced for speed.

What's new in COATS Standard version 9.0.7:

  • GMGP now goes to the year 2016.
  • "Create Floppy" commands for reports have been replaced with a sequence to create files on the hard drive.
  • State quarterly reports have been updated, esp. for Pennsylvania, North Dakota and New Jersey.
  • Firms doing business in Pennsylvania can access updated Local Quarterly Magnetic Media and Reports
**Note: If you don't do business in Pennsylvania, you'll be fine with versions 4.3.4 of COATSsql and 9.0.7 of COATS Standard. They have all the amazing features listed above. Clients doing business in Pennsylvania MUST update to 4.3.5 adn 9.08 (on the Customers Only site) in order to "access updated Local Quarterly Magnetic Media and Reports" for Pennsylvania.

State-Specific Updates in New Versions of COATS
Every new version of COATS includes lots of tax updates, because let's face it: states keep changing their tax laws, and there's 50 of 'em!

Setting Up Employee State Taxes in COATS Staffing Software
When you're plugging a new employee into COATS, there's lots of data to enter: name, address, email, availability, skills, etc. But there's also tax information to be considered, and depending on the details, that could be a lot of information.

Setting Up Tax Payment Accounts in COATS
When you're setting up COATS Staffing Software, taxes might be the farthest thing from your mind, but you'll still need to take them into consideration. Taxes are a payable, obviously, so they're tracked through Payable Accounts in COATS. Fortunately, as part of payroll payables, their transactions are automatically created whenever a payroll is appended.

Insight on Health Care Reform

One of the biggest issues for staffing in the news is the issue the Supreme Court is currently debating: the constitutionality of the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act. The court's decision will have a major impact on our industry, but the case can be hard to follow.

Fortunately, our friend John Walters of  Essential StaffCARE has prepared an excellent review of the oral arguments that have been presented before the court thus far.

John's write-up is impressive not just for John's obvious grasp of the issues but for its political objectivity and the way it reports conversations between Supreme Court Justices and the lawyers before them. You get a great sense of the issues being debated, as well as a sense of being there in the courtroom. Great work, John!
