We've got a lot to be thankful for this month. Our industry is leading all the job gains in the economy, we've got the best customers on earth and their businesses keep growing and we recently had the honor of bringing some happiness into the life of a little girl who's battling leukemia.

We're also thankful for all the service, sacrifice and dedication shown by our nation's armed service members and their families. We hope that every day can be Veterans Day, and that we can show our thanks by helping veterans get jobs.

And of course, we're thankful for the upcoming holidays: the chance to relax with friends and family, the lovely, succulent dinners that await -- and the boost in holiday staffing!

Between holiday meals, please feel free to drop into the COATS Users Group on LinkedIn to get advice from your fellow staffing leaders, and check out the COATS blog for staffing stories and legal roundups. And don't forget to like us on Facebook

All my best,

Karen

Changes are coming - STANDARD and SQL - be sure to read in order to be prepared!

Healthcare Reform Requirements:

To accommodate for the requirement of the 2012 W2 reflecting the Employer-Sponsored Health coverage, you will need to create a Non-Cash Benefit adjustment for each employee that you contribute to their healthcare premium before the first payroll dated 1/2011.  It will be required to report the combined amount of the employer and employee contributions in Box 12, coded DD on the 2012 W2.  This amount being reported is not taxable.

NOTE:  It is NOT REQUIRED to report this information on the 2011 W2 reporting.

COATS will have the ability to do this within the Year-End Update.

PA Act 32 requirements:

Effective January 1, 2012, all employers in PA must assign PSD codes (Political Sub-Division Code) to identify the municipalities and school districts for each tax collection district (http://www.newpa.com/node/6711#act32eitrates).

This will be handled within COATS by updating the locality codes in COATS.  Each of our clients have set up their local codes based on their own individual needs.

Unfortunately, this does not allow COATS to do an update across the board as none of you are uniformly set up the same.

With this new change, you will need to set up your local table based on the township/locality sub-categories updating the Local Name field to be the 6 digit PSD code vs the locality name.

For some of you, there could be more than 100 PA local codes.   You will need to update your local tax table by adding new codes.

                PA01-PA99

                PA0A-PA0Z

                PA1A-PA1Z         (replacing the 3rd character with 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9 and the 4th character A-Z)

                PAAA-PAAZ        (replacing the 3rd character with B-Z and the 4th character A-Z)

NOTE:   Each new code MUST start with PA

These new codes should handle a client's needs for all possible townships and their subcategories.

We recommend that you create a spreadsheet for your staff so they know what PA local codes in COATS tie out to the required PA PSD codes for local w/h.

After updating the local table, all employees tax screens must be updated to reflect their NEW local code.

You will need to update your local table and employees tax screens PRIOR to doing your 1st payroll dated 1/2012.

COATS: Building Hope for Emma

We had to reschedule it due to bad weather, but we finally got to build a playset for Emma, an adorable--and spunky!--4-year-old who's battling acute lymphoblastic leukemia and winning so far. COATS teamed up with the Roc Solid Foundation's Play It Forward program to build a playset and install it in Emma's grandparents' backyard, surprising Emma and her brothers.

Job Interview Questions to Try: A Two-Part Series
Our business is unique for many reasons; one of them is that we're the people most likely to enjoy job interviews. Of course, we do them so often that they can become a little dull, so it's never a bad idea to try a new style of questioning.

Here are some potential questions to ask that might tell you more about a candidate's history and their personality. We've divided these questions into two groups: stories and queries.

Stories can provide specific examples of how a candidate has performed under the sorts of conditions that are likely to arise in the position for which you're interviewing them. They can also give examples of a particular skill or talent a candidate has; for instance, instead of asking "Do you know Photoshop?", try "Tell me about a time when you used Photoshop and how you used it."

Read more about "story" questions -->

You can use queries to get to know your candidates better as people and workers, to get an idea of what they value, how they perceive themselves and others and how they view their career and your position's potential role in it.

Veterans Day Can Last All Year
Veterans Day has the easily remembered date of 11/11/11 this year. It's a nationally recognized holiday that most people have off, and that's because it's important to have a day to say "thank you" to all the men and women who have served our country.

But even better than saying "thank you" one day a year is helping veterans find jobs, especially in this economy. Hiring veterans isn't just a good thing to do, it's good business, for many reasons.

The COATS Users Group on LinkedIn is starting to heat up! We created this group for COATS users to discuss the software with us and with each other so we can all get more out of it.

This is a members-only group, so you don't have to worry about anyone wandering in and spamming us. Unfortunately, that means you do have to apply for membership, but we promise you'll get in; all you have to be is a COATS user. We look forward to seeing you there!
