"Love" might not be the first thing that comes to mind as you contemplate your business, but if you think of love as appreciation, respect and a desire for continued companionship, isn't that what you'd like to express to your clients? The COATS blog honored Valentine's Day this year by telling you how to do just that.

One word that might come to mind all too easily as you contemplate your business is "stress." Fortunately, there are steps you can take to lessen the stress you feel on the job and in your life. And if you're a manager, you can help your business's bottom line by helping your employees manage their stress better.

A great way to help your clients and yourself is by conducting background checks on all the applicants you place. But don't add to your stress by putting yourself at risk for liability when conducting them. We've got some tips for consistent, legal background checks.

Basically, we want your business to grow, to flourish and to help you, your employees and your candidates be more successful. Because we love you like that.

All my best,

Background check Cover Your Back for Background Checks

Background checks are becoming a staple of our industry. In December, SI Review reported that 60% of the companies that responded to their survey always conduct criminal background checks. (Another 38% conduct them sometimes.)

These checks are a great selling point for clients: they indicate that you provide high-quality candidates, that you value the safety of your clients' current workers and that you also value your clients' businesses in terms of risk and legal liability.

However, background checks can be a legal liability unto themselves. Because you're dealing with someone's private information, there are many laws in place to ensure this investigative power isn't abused. To make sure you're conducting legal background checks, follow these guidelines...

Stress-manager Help Your People, Help Your Profits: Fighting Stress at Work

Now that the nightmare of year-end stress is done, it's time to take a breath, relax, ... and think about the effects of stress on your employees. The situational types of stress come up during crunch times (like, say, January) and make you want to tear your hair out, but the more subtle long-term chronic stress can cause some real damage, not just to your employees' health, but to your company's finances as well.

In last year's Wellbeing: The Five Essential Elements, researchers Tom Rath and Dr. James K. Harter discovered that worker happiness and engagement can have a major financial impact. Among the least happy and least engaged employees, the annual per-person cost of lost productivity due to sick days is upward of $28,000, while the sick-day lost-productivity cost among the happiest and most engaged workers is only $840 a year.

If you'd like to save tens of thousands of dollars per year per employee by reducing stress, you can start by increasing two primary aspects of employee engagement: a sense of control over their work and careers, and a sense of appreciation and fun.

a Boss)

It's great to have a manager who's taken steps to help employees handle stress. But what if you're one of not one of these managers' employees? (Or you're a manager dealing with a lot of stress yourself?) Are there any tactics you can use to reduce, manage or otherwise tame the stress you feel?

Absolutely. No matter what your role is within your staffing company, you can manage yourself to reduce your stress. Here are some ways to do that...

How to Show Your Clients You Love Them

Heart at Work

You might have sent your clients a special Valentine's Day gift this year, maybe a box of chocolates or a gift basket. And while that's certainly a lovely gesture, there are some other things you can do that will show your clients you appreciate them and help you serve them better.

One of the most meaningful ways to engage your clients is through spending time with them, like in a romantic relationship. And the same rules of selflessness apply here as they do to romance: when you're spending time with a client, don't use that time to sell them. Instead ask how their business is doing, how they're doing as people, what challenges they're facing, what they've accomplished recently. Be sure to listen to them (and record your notes from the meeting into COATS).
