Council Director Addresses Healthy Mothers Healthy Babies Conference
MCMCH Executive Director Amy Zaagman gave a keynote address to attendees of the 2011 Michigan Healthy Mothers Healthy Babies Conference in Lansing on Thursday. The conference, "Life Course: Journey to Healthy Families," attracted roughly 200 health care professionals with an interest in maternal and child health and explored how healthy community environments reinforce family support systems through preconception, perinatal, postpartum and interconception periods.
Zaagman's presentation provided an overview of current challenges in maternal and child health in Michigan, with a focus on infant mortality, and discussed resources to engage in public policy efforts around maternal and child health.
Healthy Mothers Healthy Babies, a Council member, is a statewide coalition developed in 1984 for organizations and individuals to address maternal/child health issues and the high infant mortality rate in our state. Learn more here.

Sebelius Visits Henry Ford Hospital, Highlights Partnership for Patients Initiative
U.S. Department of Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius was expected to visit Henry Ford Hospital today to highlight the Partnership for Patients initiative, which brings together leaders of major hospitals, employers, physicians, nurses, and patient advocate,s along with state and federal governments, in a shared effort to make hospital care safer, more reliable, and less costly.
Launched in April, the partnership aims to help save 60,000 lives by stopping millions of preventable injuries and complications in patient care over the next three years, and has the potential to save up to $35 billion, including up to $10 billion for Medicare. Over the next ten years, it could reduce costs to Medicare by about $50 billion and result in billions more in Medicaid savings. The Partnership is supported by a $1 billion investment made possible by the Affordable Care Act.
Among partners committed to patient safety, Henry Ford Health System and the Greater Detroit Area Health Council Inc. are national leaders in the efforts to ensure that patients receive the highest quality of care. This event is the fourth in a series of hospital visits around the country the Secretary is making to highlight models of excellence as a part of the Partnership for Patients.
