Provide Feedback on New National Prevention Strategy
Justice Maura Corrigan Named DHS Director

Governor Rick Snyder announced Thursday that Justice Maura Corrigan will be the new director of the Department of Human Services. Corrigan will resign from the court January 14.

Governor Snyder called Corrigan a "true champion of children and families" at a press conference to announce the appointment. Corrigan has been the Supreme Court's liaison for child support and child welfare the last 10 years.  Mr. Snyder also announced she would be one of his six group executives, in her case overseeing the People group, which contains DHS, and the departments of Civil Rights, Community Health and Education.

"We have much to improve upon with respect to families and children, and she's the leader to do it," he said. "We were looking for outstanding people to join our administration. And as a practical matter, when you looked out there, who has truly been one of the greatest champions for children and families in our state? It's been Justice Corrigan. So it was a really a situation where we found each other because when you look for experts and wonderful people in this state to lead something like this, there's no one better."

Corrigan said at the press conference that her focus when she takes the helm of the DHS will be to address the problems in how the department handles foster children, adoption and other matters that have it under a court-appointed monitor.

Recession Slowed Health Care Spending
While the recession slowed the growth of the nation's health care bill to the lowest levels ever measured, a government report this week said medical costs still gobbled up a record share of the overall economy, meaning the slowdown did not change the nation's underlying problem with out-of-control health care spending.
