Teacher Quote of the Month...
"I would also like to mention that the four of us are so thrilled to be using your program. We did our first quarter assessments and LOVED all the reports we got. I also used the parent conference section. What a timesaver for reminders!"

#1 User Question: What is the Class Totals Report?:
Description: The Class Totals Report lists each student in the class, and their "total correct answers" (score) for each test, during each marking period. Students can be sorted (ranked) according to their score for any test, during any marking period. This helps identify the students who need assistance and support in any given area.
Purpose: The purpose of the Class Totals Report is to show growth over time, summarize each student's score for each test, on one page, and allow teachers to rank their class according to a test, or a total weighted score for each group of tests.
How It Works: At the beginning of the school year, the Class Totals Report starts off with 2 columns of data for each test, with the column headers "B", and "1". The "B" stands for "baseline" or "beginning". It is meant to capture the score from the very first test session for each test. The "1" column stands for the 1st marking period (semester, trimester, or quarter), and the number shown is the cumulative total of correct answers for tests given during the 1st marking period. After the first marking period is past, another column with "2" as the column header will appear for each test, and will show the total number of questions that were marked as correct through the 2nd marking period. Therefore, at first, the "2" column will show the same score as the "1" column. Once a student has been re-tested during the 2nd marking period, the "2" column will update, and any additional correct answers will be added to the score in the "2" column. The "1" column will continue to reflect only correct answers that were marked during the dates that are set as the 1st marking period.
The Class Totals Report accomplishes this by knowing the date that each test question was marked as correct, and knowing the dates that each marking period starts and ends. With this information, the Class Totals Report is able to determine the total questions that were marked as "correct" in, or before each marking period. This shows a cumulative score, over time, for each marking period.
A "marking period" can include semesters, trimesters, or quarters, and the dates are set when an account is created. Teachers can choose their marking period, and set the date range for each semester, trimester, or quarter. To edit the marking periods, click on the Profile button at the top when logged in to ESGI. |

"My aunt is a first grade teacher in Northern New York. One day she was explaining the different seasons to her class. Summer, Spring, Winter and Fall. My aunt opened the window to show her class the leaves that had fallen on the ground, then asked if one of her students could tell her what season it was now. A little boy outfitted with camouflage raised his hand, she called on him. "What season is it?", she asked. Without missing a beat, "It's hunting season". He was right!

| Teach the Joy of Giving with a Simple Toy |
| Spencer's Treasures
Do you remember, as a child, unwrapping that one gift you couldn't live without? We all treasure moments when toys brought joy to our lives. Five-year-old Spencer Stockton treasured his toys so much, that after he died of leukemia, his family created a way to bring that same joy to other sick children; the joy of a simple toy.
"Spencer's Treasures" is a nonprofit organization that collects "kid's meal" or small hand-size toys and donates them to the children's wards of hospitals across the country. This is a great way to teach your students about the joy of giving. Consider organizing a collection drive in your classroom or throughout your entire school. Send a letter home asking families to donate unopened "kid's meal" or tiny hand-sized toys. The toys are free, but there is tremendous value in teaching a child the gift of charity; giving to others without expecting anything in return!
Start by going to www.spencerstreasures.org for more information and to find a drop-off location near you! Toys can also be shipped to "Spencer's Treasures" at 809 Huntington Road, Kansas City, MO 64113 or 9552 Woodlawn Drive, Huntington Beach, CA 92646. Other creative ways to help "Spencer's Treasures" is to hold a "Cents for Spence" coin drive and donate the proceeds to help purchase small hand toys to be placed in hospitals that care for children with life-threatening illnesses. The Joy of a Simple Toy can brighten the lives of so many courageous children around the country. Put a smile on a child and start donating today!
