Jacksonville Humane Society News & Mews March 2010
Greetings!

Adelina

With the winter months behind us and daylight savings ahead, spring has sprung.  The warmer weather beckons us to enjoy the outdoors.  This weekend promises to be beautiful, so take your furry friend out for a walk or a picnic in the park.

Do you have the luck of the Irish?  On Saturday, March 20, we are celebrating St. Patrick's Day in honor of our 125th anniversary.  There will be food, fun and some fantastic adoption specials.  Join us next Saturday and meet the furry faces at JHS - you may find your perfect match!

As always, we share something fun, something educational and a happy tail in this issue of News and Mews. Enjoy!

On behalf of our one-of-a-kind pets, we thank you for your support and your passion for our cause.

Sincerely,

Leona P. Sheddan
Executive Director

CAN MY PET GET EAR AND EYE INFECTIONS?

EAR INFECTIONS

Ear infections in cats are usually due to ear mites.  Ear mites in cats are contagious but are easy to treat.  They usually look like coffee grounds a cat's ears.  They may cause a cat to shake its head or scratch its ears.

Yeast infections cause most ear infections in dogs.  They occur most often in dogs with long, floppy ears (such as hounds and cocker spaniels) because yeast grows in warm, moist environments.  Air cannot penetrate through floppy ears.

EYE INFECTIONS

Cats tend to get viral eye infections.  Viral eye infections, or viral conjunctivitis, are contagious.  Several viruses cause upper respiratory infections in cats that can also cause conjunctivitis.  The most common viral cause of upper respiratory infections and eye infections in cats is feline herpesvirus.

Dogs typically contract bacterial conjunctivitis.  Bacterial conjunctivitis can cause eye discharge, squinting, redness and cloudiness in the eyes. Your dog may also try to rub and scratch their eyes.

Gracie

"Gracie is soooooo sweet!..." - Leonard Family

Grace, now called Gracie by her new family, was found by someone who spotted her in their backyard with a litter of five kittens.  She arrived at our facility malnourished and scared.  She has a cataract in her right eye and a deformed jaw that our medical staff believes is the result of an untreated injury.  "I absolutely adore Grace and see nothing but her beauty," says one JHS adoption counselor.  "She has a wonderful spirit for all she has endured in her life. She will make an awesome companion for some lucky family."

Gracie has indeed found a forever home with one of our volunteers and her family, who also fosters many of our pets.  She inquired about 'hard to place' cats, so one of our adoption counselors suggested Gracie as a match.  "Everyone started telling me how special she was," said Sherry, our dedicated volunteer.  She fosters a number of feral cats as well and found Gracie to be a breath of fresh air.  "She is a happy cat and keeps herself very entertained," said Sherry.  "She has lots of personality! Gracie is just what my family needed."
