Jacksonville Humane Society News & Mews January 2010
Greetings!

Adelina

Thank you to all of our wonderful supporters for your generous donations this holiday season and beyond.  Your contributions have helped us reach our 125th anniversary of providing services to our community.  Many of you donated much needed items from our wish list as well.  These items helped us give the furry faces, who spent the holidays with us, plenty of TLC!  We are so grateful to have so many dedicated volunteers and donors - we could not do what we do without you!

Stay warm this season and remember your pets are susceptible to this chilly weather even though they have fur coats!  In this issue of our newsletter, we've included some helpful tips to keep your pets warm and healthy this winter.  Of course, nothing keeps you warmer during the winter months like unconditional love from one our special pets.  I encourage you to visit our one-of-kind pets for one-of-a-kind homes today!

Happy New Year!

Sincerely,

KEEP YOUR PETS WARM AND HEALTHY THIS WINTER

As the temperatures drop throughout Northeast Florida, the Jacksonville Humane Society is reminding owners to keep pets warm, especially animals that live outside.

FACTS AND TIPS:
  • People should remember that even though animals have fur, they are quite susceptible to the cold.
  • Animals must have adequate shelter from cold, wind and moisture during the winter.
  • Low temperatures can increase a pet's risk of infectious diseases, so it is extremely important to bring your pet inside or shelter them in a well-built doghouse, tool shed or garage.
  • Insulate your pet's shelter with deeply bedded straw or blankets.
  • Make sure your animal has fresh water at all times and that the water does not freeze.
  • Pets may need additional food to sustain their body temperature when it is cold. Check with your veterinarian to decide if your animal needs additional food during cold weather.

Pet of the Week

 Annie

Say hello to Annie!  Annie is a two-year-old Domestic Shorthair.  Annie is a very active girl who likes to be right in the middle of things!  She is confident and adventurous, but also very affectionate.  She is sure to be a great addition to any home.  Won't you please come meet Annie today?

The Pet of the Week can be adopted for only $25!  You will also receive a free cardboard cat carrier and a goodie bag.

Top 5 Reasons to adopt a cat:
  • COMPANIONSHIP: Cats make wonderful companions.  They greet you when you get home. They follow you from room to room.  And they cuddle on your lap when you're feeling lonely.
  • INTELLIGENT: Cats are smart and can learn tricks, like "sit" and "high-five," just like a dog.  Many cats can even be taught to fetch.
  • FUN & FRISKY: Cats stay playful, no matter what their age.  It's always a joy to watch a cat play with the simplest toys -- even a string will excite them!
  • GOOD FOR YOUR HEALTH: Cats can lower your blood pressure and help fight depression.
  • LOW MAINTENANCE: Cats can take care of themselves while you are at work.  They don't have to be walked, and they always stay clean!

News and Mews
A special thanks to Hartz Mountain Corporation for their generous donation of 16 palettes of Hartz products to the Jacksonville Humane Society.  We were thrilled to see so many great products donated, such as rawhides and bones of all sizes, shampoo, leashes and collars, toys and so much more!  We will use this amazing donation to support the thousands of homeless animals assisted by JHS each year.
