Greetings!
Kitten Season has arrived! Spring and summer months typically bring a surge of cats to our community's animal shelters - it is the time of year when JHS and all other organizations like ours are overrun with a high volume of tiny little balls of fur that need homes.
Please remember how important it is to spay and neuter your pets. A healthy, unaltered female cat and her offspring can produce an estimated 420,000 cats in a seven-year period! These numbers are astounding but true.
We encourage you to come visit our adoption center and celebrate Adopt-A-Cat month with JHS. We have a number of adoption specials available and so many kittens and cats looking for loving homes. From the entire staff at JHS, we thank each and every one of you for you continued support and dedication to all our special pets.
Sincerely, Leona P. Sheddan Executive Director

Kitten Season is here again!
Beginning in the spring, peaking early summer and ending in the fall, it is the time of year when cats give birth. Driven by their hormones, unaltered cats seek the outdoors to find a mate. The result is a very high volume of kittens in our shelters and on the streets.
You may have already noticed increased numbers of kittens in your local shelters, seen posted signs in your neighborhood or rescued a litter yourself. The best way to help reduce the number of unwanted cats and kittens is to spay/neuter your own pets.
Did you know?
- Kitten season is the unofficial name for the mating season for cats generally assumed to start in March and end in November.
- An unaltered female cat will go into heat every 3 weeks.
- The average size of a litter is 4-6 kittens.
- One mother cat can have 2-3 litters per year, producing as many as 18 kittens.
- A female cat can begin having kittens at 4-5 months of age.
- One unaltered female cat and her offspring can produce an estimated 420,000 cats in a seven-year period!
- Kittens as young as two months and weighing two pounds can be safely altered.
What to do if you find a kitten?
- Call the JHS admissions office for information and assistance, 904.725.8766 ext. 222.
- Become a foster parent! Kittens must be 8 weeks old and two pounds to enter our facility. We need foster parents to accommodate the high volume of kittens during kitten season. We will provide food and supplies to all foster families. Email our foster/rescue manager to find our more on becoming a foster parent.
There are many ways you can help JHS this Kitten Season from fostering to raising much needed funds to working with feral cat colonies to help control your neighborhood's cat population. Please check out our website's monthly topic, Kitten Season, to find out how you can help!

People and Pets Visit the Acropolis
at JHS's 10th Annual Fur Ball

Veronica and T.R. Bosoworth with Jethro
More than 350 people and 150 dogs celebrated an evening in ancient Greece at the Jacksonville Humane Society's 10th Annual Fur Ball. Guests enjoyed fine dining, live and silent auctions, a pet-treat bar and exciting entertainment on Saturday, May 16 at the University of North Florida's University Center. The event's theme was "A Night at the Acropolis."

Casey Black with Bunker and Bogie
The evening began with red-carpet interviews by WJXT's Casey Black, followed by a dinner of Greek delicacies and comedy by Mark Cordes of "Comic Strip Live," "Caroline's Comedy Hour" and "An Evening at the Improv" fame. Megan Blake, host of Animal Attractions TV, made a guest appearance, and WEJZ's Arthur Crofton served as the evening's emcee.
Many animals (and their families) came dressed in their finest gladiator and goddess costumes and competed for the coveted titles of King and Queen of the Fur Ball. Beowulf Sayer was named King, while Dusty Neill took the Queen's crown.
Their court included:
Mr. Congeniality: Duncan Du Charme Ms. Congeniality: Kiki Rochow 1st Prince: Jethro Bosworth 1st Princess: Mia Rountree 2nd Prince: Reuben Smith 2nd Princess: Rosie Hess 3rd Prince: Luke Cohen 3rd Princess: Jo Jo Jackson 4th Prince: Logan Miller 4th Princess: Ellie Christensen 5th Prince: Boots Blocker 5th Princess: Smookie Du Bois

Susan (JHS board member) & Matt Welch with Lizzie
The 2009 Fur Ball was made possible by the event's title sponsor and honorary chairs, David Pepper and Amelia Duddington. Other sponsors included Miss Daisy's Delights, provider of the pet bar, Lee Printing, Legal Art Works and PRI Productions. All proceeds from Fur Ball benefit the Jacksonville Humane Society, a non-profit center for animal education and welfare that serves as a resource for all companion-animal related issues.

Come on by and vist JHS to find your purrfect match!
Top 5 Reasons to adopt a cat:
-
COMPANIONSHIP: Cats make wonderful companions. They greet you when you get home. They follow you from room to room. And they cuddle on your lap when you're feeling lonely.
-
INTELLIGENT: Cats are smart and can learn tricks, like "sit" and "high-five," just like a dog. Many cats can even be taught to fetch.
-
FUN & FRISKY: Cats stay playful, no matter what their age. It's always a joy to watch a cat play with the simplest toys -- even a string will excite them!
-
GOOD FOR YOUR HEALTH: Cats can lower your blood pressure and help fight depression.
-
LOW MAINTENANCE: Cats can take care of themselves while you are at work. They don't have to be walked, and they always stay clean!

PETS OF THE WEEK - DYNAMIC DUOS!

These two cuties, Butterball and Buttons, are 6-year-old sisters that have been together their whole lives. They are very attached to each other and need to be adopted as a pair. Both are very social and like to be in the middle of whatever you are doing. They love to play and snuggle! Buttons and Butterball can be adopted for $50 ($25 each). You will also receive free cardboard carriers, cat blankets and a goodie bag.
Agua and Eduarda
Eduarda is a 5-year-old shepherd mix and loves to run and play, especially in the kiddie-pool. Agua is a 5-year-old jack russell terrierr mix that loves to hide behind a tree and surprise Eduarda when she runs by! They have been together since they were puppies and need to be adopted as a pair. They are both very sweet and a lot of fun! The duo can be adopted for $50 ($25 each). We will also offer $10 off the required purchase of heartworm prevention, a bag of treats and a toy.

Damita goes home!
"So far she has been a joy. She seems to be enjoying all her play toys. She likes the dogs and likes to groom them. On the contrary, Bogart, my other cat, is not a fan of the newest edition. I believe he is threatened by her mere one-pound lb body mass compared to his 21 lbs of mass. Bogart hisses and growls, but that is to be expected. I presume with time he will be her 'side-kick' and love her unconditionally as he can be her prince. She is a beautiful kitty, and so far VERY playful. She follows me everywhere, and loves to play figure 8 when walking...which by the way is very dangerous for the human who almost tripped and fell (me!)."
Thank you again,
Heather
