Greetings!
This November we are Falling for Felines! We have so many wonderful cats and kittens awaiting their forever homes. With Thanksgiving Day around the corner, we begin to give thanks for all who have brought happiness and joy to our lives, furry faces included. If you've been thinking about adding one to your family, now is the time. These special family members offer unconditional love and a lot of fun and entertainment. What better way to celebrate the holidays than by bringing home a new dog or cat. Help JHS celebrate our one-of-a-kind pets for one-of-a-kind homes by visiting our adoption center today. Thank you for caring. You are making a difference! Sincerely, Leona P. Sheddan Executive Director

The fall season is upon us and here at JHS we are "Falling for Felines"! Now through the end of November you can adopt a cat 6-months or older for only $25! You will also receive a cat blanket and goodie bag. For more information call or come in today!
Our monthly topic focuses on tips to help you get prepared for your new furry-faced family member.
HOMECOMING------------------------------------------------------------------
Your Cat Needs a Tag Remember, a visible ID Tag is a lost pet's BEST chance of getting home. All City of Jacksonville resident cats are required to have rabies vaccinations on an annual basis. JHS inoculates all of our animals and will provide the pet owner with the paperwork required to submit your Pet License Application to the Tax Collector. Visit www.coj.net for more information, including fees and office locations. Cat Carrier Bring your new cat home in a cat carrier. Cat carriers are a safe and familiar place for your cat when you visit the veterinarian or travel, and can help keep your curious cat (at any age) out of trouble. JHS requires that your adopted feline must leave our property in a cat carrier. We sell temporary cat carriers for only $7.
Litter Box You can help your kitten (12 months and younger) to understand what is expected by placing her in the litter box after feeding. Kittens do not need a full-size litter box and might do better in a box with lower sides (about 1 inch).
Playing Providing appropriate toys for exercising your cat's natural predatory instincts of pouncing, stalking and chasing will ensure she has a safe and healthy outlet for these behaviors. Scratching posts are an excellent investment - it will allow your cat to scratch, stretch and exercise all at once.
SAFETY TIPS--------------------------------------------------------------------
- Be aware of the plants you have in your house and in your yard. The ingestion of a poisonous plant may be fatal.
- Never allow your cat access to the area where cleaning agents are used or stored.
- Never give your cat any medications unless under the directions of a veterninarian.
- Many common household items have been shown to be highly toxic or lethal in certain species, even in low quantities. Some of these items include pennies, mothballs, potpourri oils, fabric softener sheets, automatic dish detergents, batteries, cigarettes, coffee grounds, alcoholic drinks, chocolate and turkey bones.

Lucy taking a rest from play-time!
"Lucy and Elsa had a great day! We took a morning walk and an afternoon walk. Elsa is returning back to her happy, super-silly self! Their play is lasting longer (often initiated by Elsa now!), and Lucy is backing off a bit and decreasing her roughness (softer chewing on Elsa's neck and ears and feet). Lucy likes to pick up toys and bring them to Elsa. They are forming a great friendship... they take breaks from tug-of-war in order to lick each other's snouts. It is so sweet.

Lucy and Elsa licking snouts!
Also, Lucy is doing a great job acclimating to a new life of luxury! She loves laying in the sunlight in her new bed on the floor by the patio door as she watches the lizards outside. She's able to hop in and out of the car now for fun rides, she confidently goes up and down the stairs, and she and Elsa are able to sit next to each other to receive tasty treats (although we still feed them breakfast/dinner in separate rooms and will continue to do that for quite some time as we work on Lucy's feeding skills... she's been making trades (for cheese cubes and sliced turkey) nicely!. She's mastered sit, she's working on come, stay and off. She is so smart and happy!

Looking for lizards!
"Also, she's had two baths. She was a good sport and a trooper in the bathroom. It took about 45 minutes to get her in the tub - receiving a treat for standing at the door, then a foot closer, then another foot closer untill she ate the treat off the edge of the tub, then leaned into the tub to eat a treat off the floor of the tub, then with my help she got in the tub. Tthe second time she had a bath, it only took a couple minutes to get in the tub on her own terms rather than me helping to lift her front paws over the edge... she didn't shake or pace at all... what a good girl!. We are so proud of her! She has adapted so well and learned so much just in the three days she's been here!"
