Greetings!

It's that time of year again. Vacations are over, children are back in school and structure returns to our lives. During this very busy time, let's not forget the furry faced members of our families. Including your pet in family activities enhances the quality of your life and theirs. Exercise and good nutrition are the keys to good health for both people and pets.
Take advantage of the cooler weather, and enjoy long walks around your neighborhood. Vary the type of exercise and playtime activities for you and your pets. And, remember what you feed your pets is equally important in maintaing their health. We highly recommend all Purina products, which are available in our boutique. When it's time for you or a friend to add a "one-of-a-kind pet to your one-of-a-kind home", remember all the wonderful guests waiting here at the Jacksonville Humane Society for a chance to become a permanent member of a family. If you can't add a new pet to your family, please remember to donate to JHS so we can continue our life-changing work. Our Thrift Store needs your gently used items, we always need items on our Wish List, and no donation is too small. Thank you for caring!
Sincerely, Leona P. Sheddan Executive Director |

Camp Kindess 2009
With the summer months behind us, we've completed yet another very successful Camp Kindness. Due to the program's popularity, Meghan Kopitke, humane education manger, restructured the program to accommodate the increased numbers of new and returning campers. Instead of three two week sessions, Meghan extended camp to seven one-week sessions, from 8 a.m. - 12 p.m. Next year, we'll offer half day and full day.
The mission of Camp Kindness is to help find homes for our homeless animals. The children are separated into teams, and each team is assigned a dog at the beginning of the week. The camper's goal during Camp Kindness is to help get 'their' dog adopted. This provides the campers an opportunity to learn about responsible pet ownership: basic obedience, food and water, exercise and grooming.
The campers keep a journal of their experiences and participate in other activities including arts and crafts, games, and a tour and overview of the Jacksonville Humane Society. This year we had some very cool guest speakers as well. The kids met Brandon the Beagle from Brandon Pest Control, a JSO officer with the K9 Unit and Jaguars player Marcedes Lewis! They also observed spay/neuter surgeries.
Creating videos to showcase the dogs, was another highlight for the campers. Check out the videos online! They are truly amazing.
Camp Kindness looks forward to summer 2010. We enjoyed all our campers and hope to see them next year for an even more exciting JHS experience!

Dogs Chewing...on you...on your stuff!
Your pup likes to chew - to him, the entire world is a chew toy! Use chewing as a substitute behavior for other undesirable behaviors. It's our job to teach chewing discrimination. Reasons why dogs chew:
- Teething puppies try to relieve pain.
- The repetitious motion of chewing can be soothing to an anxious dog.
- Learn more...click monthly topic.
Tips to teaching your dog to chew approved items:
- While teaching your dog to chew on approved items, make sure chew hazards like cords, medicines, cleaning supplies and certain foods (e.g. chocolate) are out of reach.
- If you are unable to supervise, consider using a wire crate to confine them for short periods while you are away.

Another Pet Therapy Success Story!!

She loves watching TV with her dad!
To JHS staff, this sweet doggie was known as Angela. Mom and Dad have since renamed her Andi. She is truly another example of how life-changing measures can impact so many. JHS acquired her from Animal Care and Protective Services and discovered she had demodex mange so badly you couldn't tell what type fur she had or even the color of her coat. And, a couple days after her arrival at our facility, we learned that she was a food guarder. Realizing the potential of this very special furry face, we were determined to nurse her back to health!
Once the medical team treated her skin condition, and Renee Yaple, JHS behavior manager, successfully graduated Andi from the food guarder program, she was adopted. Since her adoption, she has shown no issues with food. In fact, during a party her family hosted, she helped herself to a single appetizer (who could resist a taste, afterall!) from a full plate on the table and did not go back for more. Not a greedy girl!
Recently, she graduated from our dog training class and celebrated the anniversary of her adoption. Mom and Dad are thrilled with her progress, and continue to spoil the furriest member of their family!

A note from Mom... Hi Renee!
I just wanted to send you a photo of Andi!
We took her to the Riverside Arts Market this weekend (our first time out like that), and she LOVED it! She said hi to everyone and was great with all the other dogs. You really did wonders for her!
If you ever need her around for anything, just let us know! She is definitely a shining example of what you guys can do.
