Jacksonville Humane Society News & Mews Volume III, 2009
Greetings!

Adelina
April was Volunteer Appreciation Month.  At JHS, we appreciate our volunteers every day.   Without the hundreds of men and women who give so generously of their time, talent, and treasure, the quality of life for the animals who are our guests would be greatly diminished.

Every day dogs have the opportunity to go outside and play, cats are treated to the loving attention they want, puppy cages are kept clean and tidy and special events are staffed.  All this happens because we have so many people who care and make a difference in the lives of these wonderful animals.  The animals will eventually find their forever homes.  The volunteers will continue to come and provide their life saving and life changing efforts for all the animals who pass through JHS.

From the entire staff at JHS, we thank each and every one of you for your time and love!

Sincerely,

Leona P. Sheddan
Executive Director

 Jaguars' Marcedes Lewis Visits JHS

Jaguars tight end Marcedes Lewis visited the Jacksonville Humane Society last Wednesday to tour the facility and meet the staff. "If I wasn't a football player, I would probably be a veterinarian," said Lewis.  He is both an animal advocate and a big supporter of JHS.  With plans to volunteer at our facility over the next few months, he'll have an opportunity to observe surgeries and other medical procedures as well as work directly with the animals alongside our many other volunteers.  He also plans to serve as an ambassador educating young children on the values of responsible pet ownership.  He's a natural!

We'd like to extend a special thanks to all of you who have worked to raise money on our behalf.  Your generosity goes a long way to help sustain JHS and keep our animals happy and healthy.

First Street Gallery hosted their Second Annual Paws & Claws benefiting JHS and raised close to $1,300 for us!  Thanks for all of your hard work.  We are grateful for your support!

JHS Benefits from Eagle Scout Service Project

Bishop Kenny High School student and boy scout, Connor Sullivan, has personally constructed and donated several wooden benches to the Jacksonville Humane Society.  Sullivan has been a boy scout for five years and must earn a total of 21 merit badges and complete a community service project demonstrating leadership, planning and organizational skills, to become an eagle scout .  He chose JHS to fulfill his eagle service project because says Sullivan, "It is not only a wonderful cause but JHS gives hope to lonely animals while making it convenient for families to find their ideal pet."  The soon to be eagle scout and his family share their home with four cats: Tiger, Patches, Shadow and Boots.

Want to learn more about JHS and get involved?

We have so many young supporters in our community, and we can't possibly fit them all in our monthly newsletter.  We recognize your efforts, and we are so grateful to have your support.  In honor of our KIds Who Care, we are working toward creating a page within our website dedicated soley to you!

We'll offer a list of fun ways for kids to get involved with JHS.  Whether it's organizing a fundraiser or a donation drive, we can help you get started.  We'll also have a photo gallery featuring all of the kids who have contributed to our organization, helping us keep our special furry friends happy and healthy.

We plan to launch this page within the next month, so stay tuned!

 Milly

Milly Snuggles with Her Favorite Pal

"Milly, whom we've since renamed to "Kitty-Kitty" (because she responds to nothing other) is doing wonderful.  She is a very loving kitten, and we all adore her; even on her feisty days.  She spends her days sunbathing on window sills and unfortunately, her favorite evening spot happens to be smack dab in the middle of our dining room table. Breaking her of this habit has been impossible as she just gives us kisses and continues to do what she pleases.

Anyway, I just wanted to contact you to assure you that this particular adoptee is living the high life and is very well loved...especially by our 10 year old daughter!  Thank you again for the wonderful addition to our family."

Sincerely,
Kim

Pet Spotlight

 skittles

Meet Skittles!

Skittles is a 5-year-old domestic long hair.  Skittles is an independent cat that likes to cruise around and do her own thing.  She's not a lap cat but likes to hang out wherever you are and watch what you are doing.  She is pictured here hanging out in the office of the director of customer service who says Skittles loves to have her head scratched and lets you give her kisses.  She would prefer to be the only cat in the home and is front declawed so she would need to be an inside only cat.  To meet this furry friend, call JHS today.  Skittles can be adopted for only $25.  You will also receive a free cardboard pet carrier, cat blanket, and goodie bag.

morton

 Meet Morton!

This handsome guy is named Morton!  He is a 1-year-old shepherd mix.  Morton is what we call a "Go-Getter"!  He has lots of energy and is looking for a companion with an active lifestyle.  He loves to run and play catch and at the end of the day would like nothing better than to curl up next to you.  Morton is the total package....good looking, fun and loving.  All that's missing is you!  Won't you come meet Morton today? The Dog of the Week can be adopted for only $25.  We will also offer $10 off the required purchase of heartworm prevention, a bag of treats and a toy.
