Jacksonville Humane Society News & Mews Volume II, 2009
Greetings!

Adelina
April 7th was the second anniversary of the fire that destroyed the Jacksonville Humane Society and took the lives of so many animals.  As I reflect on that terrible fire, the pain is replaced by the care and concern of the brave firefighters and police officers that worked so hard to save the lives of 80 animals.  We are so fortunate to live in a community where our public safety officers will risk their lives to save animals.

The wonderful people and businesses on the First Coast wrapped their arms around us with compassion and donations.  People around the nation and the world came to our aid.  "All for the love of the animals,"  to help those who cannot help themselves.

We have moved forward with enthusiasm.  We are still in our temporary facilities, but in 2008 we placed 4,000 one-of-a-kind animals in one-of-a-kind homes.  That number is twice the number placed in either 2006 or 2007.

Our primary mission is to be a resource in our community for all animal- related issues fostering pet/people relationships.  Each of you has helped us continue to serve our community and the animals that need us.

From the staff and board of directors of the Jacksonville Humane Society, we say thank you for giving us the opportunity to continuously serve you and our community since 1885!

Sincerely,

Leona P. Sheddan
Executive Director

Staff and Volunteers Gather for a Memorial Service

On April 7th, JHS staff and volunteers gathered together to share a moment of silence in memory of the 86 animals that perished in the 2007 fire.  On this anniversary, we remember the lives lost on that day, but recognize the importance of moving forward so we can continue to be advocates for our furry friends and improve the welfare of all animals at JHS.  In light of this, a board member, Alyson Lee, was inspired to donate $86 for the 86 lives lost and has challenged each of her fellow board members to make a similar memorial donation to the Mend-A-Friend program.

The Mend-A-Friend program was created to generate funds that go directly toward helping animals who require "extra special care," such as medical treatment for heartworm disease, mange, parvovirus, fractured limbs and other life-threatening injuries.  Some of the costs to treat these precious animals are listed below.

$100 - Repair one orthopedic surgery
$250 - Heartworm treatment for one large dog
$500 - Complete care of one animal for an extended stay

We invite you to memorialize the 86 lives lost with an $86 donation to the Mend-A-Friend fund.  Please visit www.jaxhumane.org or mail a check to the Jacksonville Humane Society (payable to: Jacksonville Humane Society).

This money will help provide life-changing, and in some cases, life-saving treatment to the animals in need of a helping hand.

The Jacksonville Humane Society's inaugural Trail of Tails: Pet Walk & Festival was an incredible success!  More than 1,200 participants -- and their pets -- enjoyed a beautiful day strolling along the Southbank of the St. Johns River.  With more than 70 teams and hundreds of individuals raising money through Firstgiving.com, we raised almost $70,000 online and a total of more than $120,000!

Thank you again for your support!  We hope to see you at next year's event.  Your participation as walkers and fundraisers generated vital income that will enable JHS to care for the animals' overall health and happiness.

Kerri Elfvin
Running for a cause

Kerri Elfvin is as dedicated to her passion for running and adventure as she is a supporter of the Jacksonville Humane Society.  On March 27th, she embarked on what is considered the "toughest footrace on earth,"  The Marathon Des Sables is a 150-mile self-supported stage run through the Sahara Desert.  She's running to raise awareness for JHS and has created a fundraising page through Firstgiving.com to raise money on our behalf.  She has personally paid for all of her expenses, so all donations to her page go directly to our beloved furry friends.

Kerri has already raised an amazing $3,706.00 surpassing her original fundraising goal of $3,000.  If you would like to make a pledge to her fundraising page, visit www.firstgiving.com/kerrielfvin.

Golde Kids

Eli and Griffin Visit JHS

Each year the Golde brothers, Eli born March 11th and Griffin born March 26th, celebrate their birthdays together.   This year, 8-year-old Eli and 6-year-old Griffin hosted their celebration (along with mom's help) at the the Guana Environmental Education Center on March 22nd.  Both animal lovers, the boys made the decision to collect donations for JHS in lieu of birthday presents.  The Golde family has a special bond with our organization - they adopted their beloved family pet, a 13-year-old golden retriever, from us many years ago.  Thank you Golde family for your love and support of JHS!

Emily Waldenmaier Celebrates 10th Birthday

A special thanks to Emily Waldenmaier who turned 10 years old on February 14th.  Emily celebrated her birthday by organizing a donation drive for the Jacksonville Humane Society.  She is a lover of all animals big and small, especially her horse Jason (his stage name is Audios) who has shared many a victory in recent competitions.  Her mom says she has dreams of becoming a vet, and will always have a special place in her heart for JHS pets.

Abess Elementary Community Project

Misty Fleming, a teacher from Abess Elementary, spearheaded a community project where first graders from six different classes joined together to collect more than 80 towels for JHS animals!  Thanks to Misty Fleming, students Madeline Hickey, Kahill Carrington and Alanis Ramos (left to right) and many others; our animals will have something soft and cuddly to snuggle with when they go to sleep at night.

Want to learn more about JHS and get involved?

The Jacksonville Humane Society has developed a humane education program to promote kindness and goodwill toward all animals.  Education is key to nurturing positive pet-people relationships, and it's important to begin educating at an early age to help young children develop good habits.

We have a number of opportunities for kids of all ages!  Please contact the humane education manager to schedule a presentation or enroll in one of our clubs.
  • Classroom presentations: Curriculum based upon age and grade.  This is a great way to kick off a donation drive at your school!
  • The Waggin' Tail Kid's ClubMeets on the 2nd Tuesday of the month; children 7-12 years of age welcome; $10 per person, per class. Preregistration is required. Please contact the humane education manager to enroll.
  • JHS Teen Dog Walking Club: Meets on the 1st and 2nd Wednesday of the month; teenagers 13-15 years of age welcome; FREE.  Preregistration is required.  Please contact the humane education manager.

 Axl

Axl at home on his favorite blanket

"I cannot thank you enough for changing my life!  In September of 2008, I adopted a grey 4-month-old kitten from you.  Axl grew into an extremely beautiful cat, and I love him more than anything in this world!  He is just something else: I have never seen a cat before who would not just chase balls and toys, but actually brings them back you.  He fetches like a dog!  He's also kissy-touchy-feely -- he loves sleeping in my lap,  jumping in my lap and licking my face.  I can't even imagine how I lived before him, swamped with work and school.  Now I have someone to come home to, who greets me at the door, and who waits for me to come home from work to an apartment that is not empty and lonely anymore."
