WINGS Foundation, Inc.
Greetings!

The holidays can be a mixed bag for survivors and their families.  Cheerfulness does not always abound and conflicting emotions can make for difficult choices around how and if to spend time with loved ones and friends this time of year.  Consider some tips from the WINGS handbook, Survivors Guide to Healing:
  • Participate only in those activities you really enjoy;
  • S-L-O-W down.  The thing most people want for the holidays is relaxed time with family and/or friends.  Hectic is a choice - if you don't want a hectic holiday, make changes;

  • Accept your own limitations and don't be afraid to let others know what they are.  If you can't be three places at once, say so!
  • Relax your holiday standards.  Leave the perfect holiday homes, tables, parties, clothes, and families to the magazines and television;
  • Remember, healthy living is important to both good mental and physical well being.  Balance good nutrition with the pies, cakes, and candies of the holidays.  Limit or eliminate alcohol intake;
  • Exercise can help relieve stress and depression.  Whenever possible, WALK!
  • Smile!  Laugh!  Relish the fun things in life.  If you hear a good joke, share it.  If you see a feel-good movie, let others know about it;
  • Don't correct or criticize.  The holidays are about kindness and love, not perfection, advice, or achievements;
  • Roll with the punches.  Be flexible and don't let the unexpected throw you; and
  • Take some time alone.  Use it to read a good book, take a nap, or just watch a sunset.
However you choose to spend them, enjoy your holidays and remember that WINGS offers resources and support to survivors and their loved ones during this time.

With much warmth,

The WINGS Staff

Presented by Community First Foundation and FirstBank, Colorado Gives Day asks donors to give to their favorite charities online through the website GivingFirst.org. As a special incentive, the value of your donation will be increased by the Colorado Gives Day Incentive Fund - created by FirstBank and supplemented by local organizations.  Donate online from anywhere, and any time over the 24 hour period on December 8 and Give Where You Live!

Visit WINGS' profile to make a donation and remember us on December 8!

Curious about what WINGS has done with your donations lately?  In 2010 we've...
  • Completely redesigned our website to be a culturally friendly, informative site where survivors and their loved ones can obtain information and assistance;
  • Offered 17 different support groups around Denver and Colorado Springs for survivors and their loved ones, including a group in Spanish.  Your donations help those who cannot afford our nominal fees attend a support group for as long as they want;
  • Provided an opportunity for survivors and their loved ones to see former Miss America and survivor Marilyn Van Derbur speak at a motivational event held in October and;
  • Provided over 65 speaking and educational presentations to date on the long-term effects of childhood sexual abuse.
Please help us continue our important work and help more survivors become aware of what WINGS does and how we can help them by donating today.  No amount is too small to make a difference!

P.S. - WINGS always accepts online donations directly from our website.  Click here to access our secure donation site.
Loved Ones Support Group Starts January 11, 2011

Are you the family member, spouse, partner, or close friend of a survivor?  Could you benefit from your own support system while trying to help the survivor in your life?  Do you want to understand what survivors go through during the healing process?  WINGS started the Loved Ones Support Group to fill these needs.  This group is appropriate for anyone who is joining a survivor on their healing journey.

Part education and part support, the group will meet for 8 weeks on Tuesday evenings from 6-8pm beginning January 11, 2011 to assist those who are living with or helping a survivor through the sometimes rocky journey that is healing.  The fee for this group is on a sliding scale based on household income and full and partial scholarships are offered.
