The Word from WINGS

September 2010
Greetings!

Sharpen your pencils and get your backpacks ready because fall is upon us!  Back-to-school is one of those times we can begin with a clean slate that beckons us to learn something new.

With that in mind, WINGS is offering two events this fall to inspire and educate you.  Read more about both of these below.

Let us know your thoughts or ideas for working with the issue of childhood sexual abuse.  We're just a phone call or an email away.

Happy pumpkin picking -

Anne Guarnera, LPC

Check Out Our New Website!

WINGS is happy to announce that our new website went "live" in early August.  Thanks to all of you who were involved in giving feedback on the content and images used.

We would especially like to thank our web designer, Kelly Calderon (www.kellycalderon.com)
for his help and guidance with this process.

Our goals with this re-design were to provide a culturally sensitive website that would be a source of information for survivors and their loved ones, a glimpse into WINGS' program for survivors, and raise awareness of the incidence of childhood sexual abuse and the lasting effects for adult survivors.

We welcome your feedback and suggestions on additional items for the site.  Please take some time to look it over at www.wingsfound.org

Curious About how Trauma Affects the Brain?
Janine D'Anniballe, Ph.D.
Sexual abuse and assault have implications that reach far and wide for the survivors. The trauma experienced affects not only the emotional and physical self of the survivor, but also their very brain functioning and resulting behavior.

Join us for an informative workshop on the topic of trauma and its psychobiological effects. This workshop will be a combination of lecture and audience participation.  The morning session will begin with an exploration of the nature of traumatic events and the difference between normal, situational, and traumatic stress.  Next, physiological components of trauma will be introduced and the essence of such phenomenon as dissociation, hypervigilance, and traumatic memory will be explored. Clinical implications for treatment for survivors of sexual abuse and assault will be discussed and current holistic interventions in mitigating the post-traumatic stress response will be presented.   Case studies with small group participation will conclude the afternoon session.

This training will be presented by Janine D'Anniballe, Ph.D. Dr. D'Anniballe has been dedicated to the prevention, treatment, and training of sexual assault issues for the past 16 years.  Currently, she is the Director of Access, Emergency, and Community Services at the Mental Health Center serving Boulder and Broomfield Counties in Colorado.  Previously, she was the Executive Director of Moving to End Sexual Assault (MESA), the rape crisis center in Boulder Colorado for ten years.  She received her Ph.D. in Counseling Psychology from the University of Tennessee, specializing in the area of sexual abuse and trauma.

Dr. D'Anniballe serves as a trainer for the Ending Violence Against Women Project for the State of Colorado, providing training throughout the state addressing system response issues in sexual assault cases.  She has provided training and consultation to prosecutor, law enforcement, military, and university education programs in more than 25 states across the country.  In 2003, Dr. D'Anniballe joined the faculty of the National Judicial Education Program that educates judges on sexual assault issues and how these cases are approached in the courtroom so as to minimize re-traumatization of victims without undermining defendants' constitutional rights.  A licensed psychologist, Dr. D'Anniballe has a private practice in Boulder with an emphasis in the treatment of psychological trauma.  Additionally, she testifies as an expert witness in sexual assault cases throughout the state of Colorado.

Two Ways to Give to WINGS

Look for WINGS in Your Workplace Giving Campaign

Each fall, many Colorado workplaces offer employee giving campaigns. Employees are able to donate a dollar amount per paycheck to the charity of their choice.  Payroll contribution is a simple and efficient way to support the issues you care about most.  WINGS is a member of Caring Connection.

Please look for WINGS Foundation in the giving campaign at your workplace.  We are an option in the Colorado Combined Campaign (CCC), Denver Employees Combined Campaign (DECC), and also take part in local Combined Federal Campaigns (CFC) around Colorado.  Also, if your company runs a United Way campaign, you are able to write in WINGS as a "donor choice" option on the pledge card.  While we are not a United Way partner agency, they will direct the donation to us.  Please contact Caring Connection at 303-232-1646 for more information about how to bring a paycheck deduction campaign to your company.

Colorado Gives Day

Colorado Gives Day is a new initiative to increase philanthropy in Colorado through online giving.  Presented by Community First Foundation and FirstBank, Colorado Gives Day will take place during a 24-hour period starting at 12 a.m. on Wednesday, December 8, 2010.  Donations will be accepted through the website Givingfirst.org, with a goal of raising $1 million in one day for Colorado charities.  Look for WINGS Foundation's profile on the Giving First website and consider a donation on Wednesday, December 8!
