Rethink Your Drink: Gainesville Collaborative Launches Campaign Against Childhood Obesity

Pictured: Joy Griffin invites visitors to "Rethink Your Drink" at the HealthSmart Expo on October 12th.
You've likely heard the stats: Georgia has the second-highest childhood obesity rate in the country. Nearly 40% of its children are overweight or obese. This generation of kids may be the first to have a shorter life span than their parents. But did you know that the largest source of added sugar in kid's diets isn't cake, cookies or candy? It's drinks.

To attack the problem in metro Gainesville, United Way of Hall County convened local community organizations to discuss how to take on this complex issue.

That effort produced a public awareness campaign to reach children and families -- with a focus on an age group where progress could be tracked in the years to come, the 0-5 year old age group. The campaign will reach families in schools, early childcare centers, physician's offices, the community and more. Based on a program from the Centers for Disease Control & Prevention, "Rethink Your Drink" is designed to educate our community on the amount of sugar and calories in many commonly consumed beverages. For example, a regular 20-ounce soda contains 65 grams of sugar - the equivalent of 22 packets.

The goal of the collaboration is to bring the community together to empower families to start with simple healthy steps when choosing drinks for themselves, their children or their grandchildren.

The collaborative was represented at the "Rethink Your Drink" booth at the Greater Hall Chamber of Commerce (GHCC) HealthSmart Expo on Wednesday at the Georgia Mountain Center.

As a part of its work in continually improving community response to domestic violence, the Hall County Domestic Violence Task Force hosted a breakfast last week to raise awareness and honor work excellence in the field. Cpl. Sarah Wilson of the Gainesville Police Department was named Domestic Violence Officer of the Year at the event. "From this community, our deep felt thanks to Officer Wilson for her exemplary performance in compassionately working with victims of domestic violence, carefully responding to crime scenes, and diligently holding aggressors responsible," states Kit Devine, chair of the task force and senior assistant district attorney for this circuit. Cpl. Wilson has pursued additional training in this specialized area of law enforcement to the point where "other officers go to her for guidance when confronted with difficult domestic violence problems," says Sergeant Jeff Bull with G.P.D. When presenting the award, Solicitor General Stephanie Woodard praised the work of our law enforcement officers addressing this "very difficult" issue. "The obstacles they face are tremendous, and yet they continue to put their safety behind that of victims in Gainesville suffering from abuse," Woodard said.

How Do You Live It?

Chestatee Academy students and faculty Lived It by establishing a new fundraiser for their United Way of Hall County Campaign last year by buying strips of duck tape to plaster Principal Suzanne Jarrard to the cafeteria wall. Donated funds help UWHC to unite people, organizations and resources to improve lives in Hall County. What a great and inventive way to raise money for your community!
