Message from the Managing Director

Happy Spring!  This week there really is a hint of spring in the air with warming temperatures and wonderful sunshine.  I hope you have had a wonderful winter, wherever your travels might have taken you - or if you have just stayed put.  Door County has had record-setting snowfall so it has truly been a winter playground.  Hill 17 at Peninsula State Park has had quite a workout.

We are so excited about our summer season-truly a season the whole family will enjoy.  We will kick off the season with Fishing for the Moon, a lovely book musical by Fred Alley and James Kaplan that hasn't been on our stage since 1999.  Lumberjacks in Love (I can hear the youngsters' excitement) will take the stage again as will our wonderful premiere from last summer, A Cabin with a View.

Please note the change we are making in our starting date this summer-about once every 6-8 years we need to open 1 week later than usual as we adjust to the calendar-June 10 would just be too early to open.  So we will open on Wednesday, June 18 and continue through August 30-the Saturday of Labor Day weekend.

We are equally excited about our fall season.  Scott Wakefield and Jeff Herbst are assembling another wonderful concert-Sometimes a Song: The Music of Dan Fogelberg.  Sometimes a Song will kick-off at Ephraim Village Hall on Friday, September 5 and continue through Saturday, October 25.  Sunday will be our "dark day" at Ephraim this year.

And, of course, it is an election year, so we will reprise And If Elected for a short run.  And If Elected will take the stage at Gibraltar Town Hall Thursday through Sunday, October 9-19 and then move to Third Avenue Playhouse in Sturgeon Bay for 10 performances from October 23-November 2.  You won't want to miss it.

Tickets for all shows will go on sale May 1.  Our ticket prices will remain the same as last year.   Reserved seating at the park was so popular last year that we will continue selling the same amount of reserved seats for a $5.00 premium.  And of course, there will always be 400 general admission tickets for sale at the box office at the park one hour prior to each performance.
How to buy advance tickets:
  1. Visit our web site at www.folkloretheatre.com (beginning May 1)
  2. Stop at our office in the Green Gables Shops 1.5 miles north of Wilson's Ice Cream.
  3. Order them via the telephone at 920-854-6117
Hours for office and telephone sales will be 10AM-3PM, Monday through Friday through May and 10AM-3PM, Monday through Saturday, June through August.

We do accept Visa and MasterCard, but for office and theatre sales, to help keep our ticket prices low, cash or checks are appreciated.

As always I welcome your feedback, suggestions, and opinions.  I look forward to seeing each of you at the park this summer.

Until Then,

Fishing for the Moon
By Fred Alley, Music by James Kaplan & Fred Alley

Set in Wisconsin after the Civil War, this lighthearted romantic comedy celebrates the confusion when a Southern gentleman comes to rural Wisconsin seeking a crazy Union officer who thinks his cows are soldiers.  The officer's weary wife, Shirlene, has apparently made his life forever miserable by selling his prize bull while he was off at war.  Other characters include a local raconteur who's continually rebuffed by a grade school teacher, and a ditzy young woman who hopes to awaken her true love from a coma with the smell of Parisian soap.  Fishing for the Moon was last produced at AFT in 1999, and is the first collaboration between Fred Alley and James Kaplan, the team that created AFT hits Lumberjacks in Love and Guys on Ice.
Mondays at 8PM, Wednesdays at 8:30PM, and Saturdays at 6PM

Lumberjacks in Love returns to the AFT stage after overwhelming requests from AFT fans.  Four burly lumberjacks live in a state of manly bliss at the Haywire Lumber Camp in Northern Wisconsin - until an encounter with a plucky mail order bride interrupts life as they know it.  The result is big belly laughs and beautiful music.  Lumberjacks is one of AFT's all-time box office hits and celebrates a world where bath time is once a month and the blast of a dinner bell brings the boys running.  Lumberjacks in Love is a must-see for any AFT fan!
Tuesdays and Fridays at 8PM, and Wednesdays at 6PM

The year is 1959.  The place is University of Wisconsin-Madison.  Lucy has recently been 'pinned' by Chip Davis and seems well on her way to the proper degree for a young lady of that era - her M.R.S.  However, that summer she takes a trip out West to the Lazy Rapids Ranch and meets George, a young non-conformist who, along with his uncle, shakes up her very notion of what to expect out of life.  Will she choose the safe and predictable path with Chip, or break the mold with George?  Only time will tell.  Complete with a range of sounds from the fifties from girl groups, folk songs, to cowboy music - A Cabin with a View is a wonderful romantic musical comedy adapted from E.M. Forster's Room with a View, with a very American touch.

Raise the Curtain Logo
Join American Folklore Theatre as it kicks off another great season of original shows at its fifth-annual "Raise the Curtain" kick-off party, set for Sunday, May 25 at the Alpine Resort in Egg Harbor. A social hour will begin the evening at 5:00 pm, with a sit-down dinner to follow at 6:00 pm.

Since its inception in 2004, "Raise the Curtain" has been a huge success - last year over 200 people attended, and a combined total of nearly $20,000 has been raised to ensure that ticket prices remain affordable for families. The event is a great way for the Door County community and visitors to join in the excitement of AFT's upcoming season. Enjoy a delicious dinner with cash bar as you mingle with fellow AFT supporters and the wonderful company members who grace our stage as well as work behind the scenes. Take in a song or two by the AFT cast and find out about events and happenings planned for the upcoming season. A silent auction and raffle is also being held - bid on a variety of prizes from Door County businesses!

Tickets for "Raise the Curtain" are $40 for adults and $15 for children 12 and under.  If patrons would like to make a further donation, they can choose to sponsor an AFT company member for an additional $40. AFT invites all company members and administration to attend the event free of charge - to thank them in advance for the successful season that is to come.

"Raise the Curtain" is part of Curtain Call, American Folklore Theatre's fundraising event series that premiered in 2003. All monies raised through Curtain Call go to AFT's General Operations Fund, to ensure that ticket prices remain affordable for families. Help AFT "raise the curtain" on another great season! For more information, or to register for "Raise the Curtain" please call the AFT office at (920) 854-6117. Please reserve your seats early - this event will sell out quickly.
