The Power of Surrender
by Jacques McNeil

Galatians 2:20 "I have been crucified with Christ; it is no longer I who live, but Christ lives in me; and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave Himself for me. It is no longer I who lives, but Christ lives in me."

All to Jesus I surrender;
All to Him I freely give;
I will ever love and trust Him,
In His presence daily live.
I surrender all,
I surrender all;
All to Thee, my blessed Savior,
I surrender all.

In the late 1800's Judson Van Deventer, a graduate from Hillsdale College went to work as an art teacher in Pennsylvania. Even though he enjoyed his work, he struggled wondering how He could serve the Lord more completely with his life. He struggled against surrendering his will to the will of the Lord. Friends later encouraged him to pursue the work of evangelism, but he was indecisive for more than five years.

One day while in fellowship with another evangelist, he decided to give everything over to the Lord, and he later wrote, the now very familiar song, "I Surrender All." A new day was ushered into his life and he traveled throughout the United States, England and Scotland preaching the Word of the Lord. Later in his life he had the opportunity to befriend and become a mentor to a man who described him as a "kind, deeply spiritual gentleman who influenced my preaching." The man who he influenced was Billy Graham.

Oprah Winfrey also stated that early in her career, long before she was the multi-award winning talk show host, actress, producer, and philanthropist that she desperately wanted to be cast in the movie, the Color Purple.  She auditioned for the movie, and knew in her heart that this role was created for her. But it was after an extended period of time of not receiving a call, coupled with hearing that another well know actress was in line to get the role, that she questioned God, and asked why??? But it was through tear-dimmed eyes that she prayed, and sang, "I Surrender All." She realized that even though she wanted this more than anything else in life that she had to surrender her desire to Lord. A short time after she fully surrendered, she rec'd a call from Steven Spielberg and he offered her the role. The rest is truly history.

Judson and Oprah surrendered all to the Lord and their lives were literally transformed. My sister, have you surrendered all to the Lord? It may be difficult, and you may not fully understand, but I encourage you to let go and let God have His way in your life. He loves you and it pleases Him when you trust Him with every aspect of your life. He won't let you down, and He won't disappoint you. Surrender all to Jesus and watch Him bless you in ways you never imagined.

God's Word For You

But truly God has listened; he has attended to the voice of my prayer. Psalm 66:19 (ESV)

Application:

This year my husband and I have seen God's protective hand in our lives like never before. In January our heater caught on fire and before it could have destroyed our home a stranger who was passing by our house alerted the fire department. We know that it was God who placed the stranger on our street because we did not even know that the heater was on fire until the firemen came to our door. It is daunting at times to think about all the other possibilities of what did not happen to us. On the other hand I stand in awe of God because I know that I would not be writing this piece if He were not so intimately involved in my life.

I am sharing my testimony because I want to encourage you to pray as though your life were depended on it, to pray as Paul encouraged; to pray always (1 Thessalonians 5:17). I believe that Paul was encouraging the Thessalonians to intentionally spend time in prayer but also to have their hearts in a position of prayer at all times.
I am confident that God hears our prayers. He is moving on our behalf when we see it or not. I believe that when testimonies happen in our lives we must take time to pause and connect the prayers that we have prayed and give God the praise and glory. Our faith is strengthened every time we make the link that it was God who responded to our spoken and unspoken needs.

Prayer:

Thank you for being a loving and faithful God. Help me to always keep my heart in a position of prayer and to rely on you and not to lean to my own understanding. I pray that I will always connect you to answering my prayers and not take for granted the things. Thank you for what you have already done, what you continue to do and what you will do in the future. Amen.

Devotional Reading:

"If we would pray without ceasing, we must be always in the spirit of prayer. Our heart, renewed by the Holy Ghost, must be like the magnetized needle, which always has an inclination towards the pole. It does not always point to that pole, you can turn it aside if you will; in an iron ship it exhibits serious deflections, under all circumstances it is not exactly true; but if you put your finger to that needle and force it round to the east, you have only to take away the pressure, and immediately it returns to its beloved pole again. So let your heart be magnetized with prayer, so that if the finger of duty turns it away from the immediate act of prayer, there may still be the longing desire for prayer in your soul, and the moment you can do so, your heart reverts to its beloved work. As perfume lies in flowers even when they do not shed their fragrance upon the gale, so let prayer lie in your hearts."  - Pray Without Ceasing, Sermon Delivered March 1872 - Charles H. Spurgeon
