What Must Die in Your WIlderness?

What Must Die in Your WIlderness?
by Jacques McNeil

Deuteronomy 8:2 "Remember how the LORD your God led you all the way in the desert these forty years, to humble you and to test you in order to know what was in your heart, whether or not you would keep his commands."
As I read through the Old Testament I found the children of Israel's "Wilderness Experience" quite intriguing.  Here we have a group of people who were miraculously delivered from slavery with Moses at the helm, leading the expedition.  This awesome deliverance was slated for eleven days; however, the eleven day journey was extended for an additional 14,589 days, equaling forty years.  Some may say it was cruel of God to allow His people to wander for such an extensive period of time; however, a number of events transpired with opportunities for lessons to be learned during this time of wandering.

To begin with, the children of Israel were rebellious.  They murmured, complained and were impatient; they lacked faith.  As a result they were penalized.  With Moses as their leader, because of their rebellious nature, those twenty years and older were not allowed to enter the Promise Land.  Deuteronomy 1:35 states, "Not a man of this evil generation shall see the good land I swore to give your forefathers."  Here we see that the "old man" had to die in order for the "new man" to enter the Promise Land. But after forty years of wandering in the wilderness, Joshua and Caleb were the only two adults who were steadfast in their walk with the Lord, thus enabling them to cross over into the Promise Land with their children.

Our forefathers, from Abraham to Jesus have passed through a "Wilderness Experience" as well, so we are in good company when we go through the wilderness or a trying situation.  My question to you is "What "old man" must die in your life before the "new man" can enter your Promise Land?"  Is it rebellion, pride, jealousy/envy, gossiping, low self esteem, selfishness, fear, etc.....I encourage you to introspectively review your life and invite the Lord to bring healing and deliverance in these areas, so that you can prepare to enter your Promised Land.

Although the wilderness is a place filled with tests and trials, there are a number of benefits that can be obtained while there.  The wilderness is a place where God purifies us and prepares us for true holiness.  Character, faith, trust and endurance can be developed while in the wilderness.  However, I have found while in my wilderness experience that I first must submit to the process, and totally die to self.  Galatians 2:20 says, "I have been crucified with Christ and I no longer live, but Christ lives in me. The life I live in the body, I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me."

Sisters, let's choose to respond as our Lord and Savior did during His time of testing in the wilderness.  He chose to stand on the Word of God and after Satan tempted Him three times, Matthew 4:11 states, "Then the devil left him, and angels came and attended him."  Immediately following Jesus' 40 day Wilderness Experience, He began His ministry and the rest is truly history. Who knows what the Lord has in store for you on the other side of your "Wilderness Experience." As you identify what must die in your life, choose to trust and obey God and receive all the blessings He has set aside for you.

Be completely humble and gentle; be patient, bearing with one another in love. Make every effort to keep the unity of the Spirit through the bond of peace. There is one body and one Spirit-just as you were called to one hope when you were called-one Lord, one faith, one baptism; one God and Father of all, who is over all and through all and in all.
                                                         Ephesians 4:2-6

Nowadays we barley know our neighbors and connecting with people means seeking them out on the latest social networking site.  We are either hiding behind the four walls of our home or the computer screen.  Our Heavenly Father designed us to fulfill His purpose here on earth by connecting with one another.

Often we think that our miracles will come in the form of the parting of the Red Sea.  I truly believe that God wants us to experience miracles in our daily living that come as a result of our demonstration of our love towards one another.  These are things that only the human touch can provide like acts of kindness, unconditional love, forgiveness, encouragement, testimonies, prayer and sacrifice.  I have realized over time that quite often my healing was closer to me than I thought after I struck up a conversation with someone and they began to share what was on their heart.  I discovered in that conversation that the one thing that I was struggling with that person had overcame it and as a result I realized that I could too.

The lesson that I learned was valuable and I would encourage you to learn to live in the reality of God's love through connecting with our brother's and sister's in Christ and those that are in need. You will be surprised to find what God has in store for you just by connecting, the miracles are endless.

Is Your Time with the Lord a Priority?

Is Your Time with the Lord a Priority?

by Dana Frelix

The demands of life can sometimes be overwhelming. Commitments and deadlines compete for our undivided attention; the need to care for family can almost never be put off, and of course we have to take care of ourselves to ensure we are able to do it all over again the next day.

Spending time in the Lord's presence, as vital as it is, can sometimes get placed at the lowest level of our priorities due to the "necessities" of this life. With every good intention to do it later, we place reading the Word of God or spending time in His presence at a time when everything else is taken care of.

May I suggest that while the Lord in His faithfulness continues to bless us, there is so much more He desires to do in our lives if we would be diligent about investing in our relationship with Him. He longs to have an intimate relationship with His children, and at the very moment we set our desires to move closer to Him, the bible says He in turn draws closer to us (James 4:8).

As long as we are on this earth, the commitments of life will not disappear; however, we must decide whether or not we will allow them to take precedence over the necessity of connecting with our Heavenly Father. We might have to wake up earlier in the morning or record that favorite TV show to watch later, or not at all.  Whatever you choose to sacrifice one thing is certain, He rewards those who diligently seek Him (Hebrews 11:6).

I challenge myself and I challenge you to take inventory of the time you spend with the Lord.  If you discover that you could be doing more, make the necessary changes to increase the quantity or quality of your fellowship. You just might find that the life you thought was so busy has suddenly slowed down.
