Let's Celebrate African American History Month!
Did you know that we owe the celebration of Black History Month, and more importantly, the study of black history, to Dr. Carter G. Woodson? In 1926, he launched Negro History Week as an initiative to bring
national attention to the contributions of black people throughout
American history.
Thank you for supporting our publication and enjoy the articles this month.

Make Sure You're Empty!
by Jacques McNeil
--------------------------------------------------------------
"He that is faithful in that which is least is faithful also in much: and he that is unjust in the least is unjust also in much." Luke 16:10The other day while conversing with my sister, she made a statement that REALLY captured my attention. She stated, "We are to leave this earth empty." Meaning, we should share our gifts with people and the world. As she expounded on the statement, I was reminded of how important it is for people of faith to "Walk by faith and not by sight," as we pursue and utilize our God-given talents. You must realize God has placed a plethora of gifts, talents, skills and abilities in each of us. While we are on this earth, it is our responsibility individually and collectively to utilize our gifts to His glory. In the Parable of the "Talents" Jesus teaches us about three servants who were given various amounts of talents. The first two servants were equally diligent in investing their talents and doubled the value of the talents. The third servant, who was given charge over one talent, chose to hide the talent rather than invest it. This servant displayed no diligence and operated with a spirit of fear. His response to the master upon his return was, "I was afraid I might disappoint you, so I found a good hiding place and secured your money. Here it is, safe and sound down to the last cent." (Matt. 25:25). The virtue of faithfulness is examined in this passage of scripture. In Luke 16:10 we are reminded that he who is faithful in the least will also be faithful in much. Sisters, the unfaithful servant didn't know when his master would return, and we who walk by faith do not know when our master, Jesus Christ will return. However, it is our responsibility to utilize the gifts the Lord has given us "NOW!" Your reward will be based upon your faithfulness, commitment and obedience; not the size of your achievement. Many of us often face uncertainty as it relates to understanding our gifts. If you feel as though you don't know what your gifts are and/or what you should do, reflect upon John 15:16c which states, "Whatever you ask the Father in My name He may give it." In this scripture, God makes a promise. Ask in His name and He promises to give you the knowledge you need. You may feel as though you have another dilemma...maybe you have an idea what you've been called to do, but you feel as though you don't have the knowledge or skill necessary to move forward. Step out on faith; take a class (on-line or instructor led), read books and articles; network by interviewing someone who is doing what you want to do, etc. Nike has a wonderful and popular slogan; "Just Do It." Sisters, I urge you to "Just Do It!" Phil. 2:13 sates, "For it is God which works in you both to will and to do of His good pleasure." Trust that God will be with you as you go. It is His will that you begin to utilize that which was placed in you before the foundations of the world. His will is for you to live your life in such a way that when He calls you home, you'll be empty because of all you have given.

Radical Obedience: Constant Contact Through Prayer?
by Kimberely Thompson
The commands of the bible often seem unattainable, like for instance to pray without ceasing (1 Thess 5:17). I have challenged myself many times to see if I could engage in a marathon prayer dialogue with the Lord, only to find myself consumed with the day's tasks, and later realizing that I had completely forgotten my prayer challenge. What did Paul mean by that? A literal translation of the verse is to pray incessantly. According to the Merriam-Webster, "incessantly" means "continuing or following without interruption." Did Paul really mean that we should give up all other activity and only give ourselves to prayer? That we should pray non stop? If we did, we wouldn't last very long. Most of us would get distracted, fall asleep or need to go to work. Nevertheless, Paul's directive is clear. We should pray without ceasing. To begin with we must shift our thinking from envisioning this as some route exercise. Prayer is relational; it is designed to enable us to communicate directly to the Father and He to us. Prayer should be a lifestyle, a natural extension of our lives. When we think of "praying without ceasing" we should be in constant communication with the Lord or should I dare say conduct our lives in such a way that we could talk to God at anytime. With the help of the Holy Spirit we are able to do anything (Romans 8:5; Romans 8:26-27). A fruitful prayer life is intentional; it is an act of our own will. Stay in contact with God, He is waiting for your call. |
