Alex Burdo To Receive Award
                    alexburdo
The following is an e-mail as sent by Gaby and Gerry Burdo, parents of Alex Burdo, a 13-yearold parishioner being treated for cancer at Memorial Sloan-Kettering in New York.

The Sarcoma Foundation of America (curesarcoma.org) is the leading organization in funding sarcoma research and developing new therapies.

Every year they have an annual gala in New York City. This year the event is on April 26th. They recognize certain patients with their Courage Award and a few doctors with their annual award.

We just learned that Alexander will be receiving their annual Courage Award along with a football player from Boston College. We are so proud of him, like many things in his life he has met this challenge head on. He is an inspiration to many of us and so glad that he is being recognized. Dr Meyers is receiving the annual award for the work on the immune boosting drug that Alex is on.

Quick story, Alex has made friends with a currency trader from Morgan Stanley (wicked smart guy who graduated from MIT). They have the same chemo regime and spend hours talking every day. Gaby and I overheard him telling his friend that "he could not bear if his sisters had this disease and is glad it was him so they were spared." He went on to say the "he will beat it." He is not only very positive, but very thoughtful.

Our family is forever changed.  The goal for us is to work the rest of our lives to ensure that others do not have to suffer from osteosarcoma or any other sarcoma. We will use this award as a launching pad towards that goal.
