Wenatchee Valley Sports Council July 2012 Newsletter Greetings!
A quick look at the July calendar of events shows something for just about everyone to do. There are kid's day camps galore. A big salmon derby in mid-month will draw a lot of folks to the area ($10,000 in prizes doesn't hurt either). On that note, we'll feature a few tips on where to fish, courtesy of the Department of Fish & Wildlife. Softball and baseball tournaments hit their peak.... in fact, the Valley is hosting a national youth baseball tournament in late July. The AppleSox, coming off a terrific June, have 10 home games in July, and Wenatchee Valley Super Oval has three Saturday nights of action scheduled. If you enjoy junior tennis, there's a big tournament at the WRAC in a couple of weeks. And that's just some of the highlights. Definitely a fun and busy time of year. Enjoy!

Let's Go Fishing
This week, the Sports Council made contact with Travis Maitland, Washington Department of Fish & Wildlife District 7 Fish Biologist. Here's a few tips he passed along on fishing prospects throughout the region:
Upper Wheeler Reservoir. As you may know, this is a fly fishing only/catch and release water....it has been getting light pressure, but some of the fish have been nice (up to 20 inches so far). Folks should be aware that the green dot road system will only get you 1/4 mile away from the lake, so a hike in is required.
The Icicle River spring Chinook fishery opened on June 2nd and will continue through July 31st. This fishery has been consistently producing a few fish each day, with the occasional "hot day" when most everyone are getting them to bite...as groups of salmon move out of the Wenatchee River into the Icicle. This seems to occur with water temperature and river discharge fluctuations.....so it is a timing game and it is not exact science at that.
Lake Chelan Kokanee: Although this fishery slowed down a bit from earlier in June, anglers still continue to catch some of the nicest Kokanee Lake Chelan has offered in recent memory. Many of the fish have been in the 14 - 16" range and occasionally larger.
Certain sections of the Upper Columbia will open to "salmon" fishing on July 1st . Not many summer Chinook and sockeye have made passage above Priest Rapids as of June 22nd, but it will only be a matter of time and I remain positive that these fisheries will really kick in around mid July...and folks will be having a blast!!!
Also, I have been getting good reports out of Grimes (as usual)....20+ inch Cutts.
Thanks again to Travis Maitland of WDFW
