Wenatchee's Farrar Wins 3rd Stage of Tour de France!

(AP) REDON, France -- Two months ago, Tyler Farrar was demoralized, sleeping 20 hours a day. He had even stopped riding, overcome by sorrow after his best friend died in a crash at the Giro d'Italia.

On Monday, Farrar became the first American to win a stage of the Tour de France on the Fourth of July. It was the first time he had won a stage in cycling's showcase race, and he dedicated the victory to the late Wouter Weylandt of Belgium.

After crossing the finish line, Farrar held up his hands to form a "W" with his fingers and thumbs in tribute to Weylandt.

"This has been a horrible last two months with everything that happened in the Giro," Farrar said. "I've had a lot of ups and downs. But in the end, I wanted to be able to come back, and do something special to pay tribute, and this is certainly the biggest stage in the world to do that."

Farrar, a sprint specialist from Wenatchee, who rides for Garmin-Cervelo, sped ahead in the last few hundred yards of the 123-mile course from Olonne-sur-Mer to Redon to win the third stage. He has now won a stage in each of cycling's three-week major tours -- France, Italy and Spain.

The previous American to win a Tour de France stage was Levi Leipheimer, who in 2007 was first in the individual time trial in Angouleme.

"I certainly would have taken it on any day," Farrar said. "But as an American, winning on the Fourth of July, it's the icing on the cake. ... Lucky me."

Wenatchee River Drunkards Drop

Drunkards Drop - Whitewater Video (W.O. Staff)

When the main stretch of the Wenatchee River from Leavenworth to Cashmere is running above 10,000 cubic feet per second (cfs) at the Monitor River Gauge (see our 'River and Lake Levels' link to the left under 'Condition Reports'), the Trinity Wave on the lower left side of Drunkards Drop comes into shape. This is huge wave that takes on various forms at different water levels and is a favored surfing wave for kayakers. It's also a pop rafters love hitting. Here's a video from a headcam worn by Daniel at Leavenworth Mountain Sports where the rafters go for maximum ride -- with swimmingly wet results.

Drunkards Drop is an excellent rapid to play in -- the wave trains are deep and keep flushing you downstream. There's also a little time to recollect yourself in the pool just downstream of the waves before the river pulls you into additional riffles. This year with all our deep mountain snowpack, the Wenatchee has been running at or above 10,000 cfs for weeks now.

If you're not into whitewater sports yet, the summer of 2011 will be a year to learn because the deep snowpack will keep the Wenatchee River running late into summer. If you want to take up whitewater kayaking, a bomber roll is the first fundamental skill to master. Once you can roll, you can really play in the river and your other skills will progress quickly. Whether you're learning a roll from scratch or improve your roll, the best local opportunity to work on this skill is from 4 to 5:30 p.m. every summer Sunday at the Leavenworth City Pool. Kayakers from Leavenworth Mountain Sports are on hand to teach fundamentals to beginners or help experienced paddlers fine-tune their technique. The cost ($5 per session) goes to the city for pool time.

Other paddling opportunities to put on the summer calendar are Tuesday Evenings at Happy Wave (two highway miles downstream of Leavenworth). Every Tuesday evening when the river is running between 2,500 cfs and 8,000 cfs, Leavenworth Mountain Sports will be at Happy Wave from 6 p.m. until dark with boats, boards, and a barbecue. Bring your own gear and work on your surfing, spins, air, etc; try out one of the boats LMS has along; or try surfing the wave on a standup paddle board (LMS will also have SUPs to try). Bring a few dollars to donate to the access fee that is paid to use the shoreline next to Happy Wave.

The "Fishin' Magician" Dave Graybill's Weekly Report
Daves Icicle Beauties
I am struggling to hold up two huge spring salmon that I landed while fishing the Icicle River with Shane Magnuson and Kevin Winter. Both were estimated to weigh over 30 pounds!

There aren't huge numbers of summer run salmon coming over Rock Island Dam, but the ones that are showing up seem hungry.  There was a surprising number of summer runs turned in at the Hooked on Toys derby last weekend.  When I last checked there was a 27-pounder at the top of the board.  You can bet that a lot of the fish being caught this early season are by anglers using the Brad's Super Bait and Super Bait Plug Cut.  These hard plastic lures that are hinged and filled with tuna and scent are bothered by the high currents that tear a normal plug cut herring off the hook.  Many of the fish turned in for the derby were caught right in the Wenatchee area, and anglers that fished just below Wanapum Dam also turned in some fish.  Summer run fishing is just going to get better and better.  There are almost 92,000 expected to return to the upper Columbia this year.  When the river currents subside the action is going to be the best in years.  Don't forget to log on to brewstersalmonderby.com and get your ticket before they sell out!  This year's derby is going to be the best ever!

There are summer run salmon being taken in the Wenatchee area, but the best catches of kings in the early season are once again coming from below Wanapum Dam.  I caught up with Jerrod Gibbon, Okanogan Valley Guide Service, recently and he said that the fishing has been pretty consistent down there.  If anything's different it's that there is no morning bite this year.  There is more debris and water than usual, but it is fishable, he says.  Catching three or more kings a day is pretty typical here now.  He suggests that anglers use the Super Bait in the silver and chartreuse colors, and the flasher in green work best, too.  If you're not ready to start fishing for salmon yet, the triploid rainbow trout fishery on Rufus Woods Reservoir continues to be red hot.  I am still making some trips to Rufus Woods, as the big triploid fishing is very good, but I also want to get out on some of the lakes for walleye and bass.  Evergreen Reservoir, near Quincy, is one of my favorites this time of year.  The big largemouth should be on the bite now, and when you're fishing for them, Mr. Tiger Muskie just may pay you a visit.

Weekly Lake Chelan Report from Anton Jones of Darrell and Dads
Daniel Horizontal
6/30/11 - Larry Seureau's 15 year old nephew from Wisconsin with a 20 lb 8 oz Lake Chelan Laker.

What continues red hot is trolling for Lake Trout on the Lake Chelan "Bar" early in the morning.  Also hot was flyfishing Grimes Lake for nice numbers of quality sized Lahontan Cutthroat trout.

Troll for those Mackinaw in depths of 120 to 140 feet on the Bar just out from the Mill Bay boat launch.  The lower half of that piece of structure has been absolutely loaded with quality fish the past few weeks.  This last reporting period has got to be the absolute peak for numbers and big fish.  I had a "career" half day trip where my customers got 17 fish in four hours with a total weight of 133 pounds!  Every day has been good.  We have had consistent success pulling T4 flatfish in Purple Glow at 1.2 to 1.5 mph off the outriggers.  Mack's Lures Cha Cha Squidders and Silver Horde's Ace Hi Fly in glow colors baited with a strip of Northern Pikeminnow also worked great.  Those downrigger presentations have been especially deadly early in the morning when we idle our troll to less than one mile per hour.

Casting a Worden's Roostertail around the docks on Chelan can yield Northern Pikeminnow, Cutthroat trout or Smallmouth Bass.  This early summer is a time when shore fishing Chelan can be productive.

On Grimes Lake, our guide, Jeff Witkowski has had great success fishing chronomids and pheasant tail nymphs.  These are beautiful fish in a unique location.

The Upper Columbia opened for Chinook Salmon during the reporting period, but looking at the counts of fish over the dam, we are not very excited yet.

Your fishing tip of the week is to use "set tension" downrigger releases on Lake Chelan.  We highly recommend Sam's Pro Releases by Silver Horde.  They are simple to use and very effective.  "Set Tension" releases prevent false releases, allowing you to keep your presentation in the strike zone on Lake Chelan.  This is especially critical when you are fishing extreme depths because you can spend a significant portion of your day resetting lines instead of catching fish.

Your kids tip of the week is to make sure you have comfortable like jackets for your little people.  It is critical to you retaining your sanity.  You don't want to have the options of either a fussy kid or an unsafe / illegal situation.

Your safety tip of the week is to remember to stay hydrated.  Water is your best bet.  Those electrolyte replenishers are pretty good too.  Summer in Chelan!  Another day in paradise!
