Wenatchee Outdoors Trip of the Week - Andy Dappen |

Twin Peaks - Micro & Macro (W.O. Staff)
At this time of spring, the views from the top of Twin Peaks are a spectacular display of nature's palette. In the big scheme of things you've got green hills, red-barked trees, and a twisting blue river. And right under your nose on the rocks crowning the top you've got a microscopic (actually macroscopic when talking photography) display of primary colors. Getting to the top is colorful, too - the flowers are bursting like popcorn in some of the zones you travel through.
There are many road and trails on Twin Peaks and while routes on the sunnier exposure are snow-free now. The north-side trails and roads still have snow at the top. Here are some recommended trips taken from our online guidebooks to enjoy on Twin Peaks. Incidentally, in case you didn't know or in case you've looked at topo map and couldn't find it, Twin Peaks is also called Horselake Mountain. How confusing.

The "Fishin' Magician" Dave Graybill's Weekly Report |
| Rollie Schmitten's first-ever channel catfish was a real dandy. This one weighed almost 17 pounds and put up a terrific battle. |
I did something new and different last weekend. I fished for channel catfish off the mouth of the Walla Walla River, where it enters the Columbia. Don Huffman, a guide that lives in Wenatchee, goes down there every year in the spring, and this is the first time that I got a chance to join him. The numbers of catfish that enter the Walla Walla River to spawn is amazing, and the size that they get impressive. Huffman has put over 1,700 pounds of channel cats in his boat this spring, and the big fish are still there. He has caught many in the 20 to 25 pound class. The big spawning females will move into the river soon, but the smaller males come in later and they come in hordes. Thousands of them show up and the numbers that sport anglers catch is incredible. These are prime eating, migrating fish, and you can fill your freezer with them in June. Rollie Schmitten and Jim Passage, both of Lake Wenatchee joined Don and I on this trip, and I want to thank Bill Ballantine, who arranged the trip, but wasn't able to come. We had a great time and caught channel cats weighing over 16 pounds.
I have two dates that I want to you remember. The first is Saturday June 4th, which is when the annual Kids Fish-In Day happens at the National Fish Hatchery in Leavenworth. There have been some changes this year, the most important to note is that it is now a free event. You still need to register your kids, but it can all be done on-line. You can visit my web site at fishingmagician.com, and click on the Friends of Northwest Hatcheries banner on the right and it will take you right to the registration page. Just select the time that you want to come and you will get confirmation back in your inbox. It's just that easy and I hope to see you and your family at the event. The next important date is Wednesday, June 8th. That's when I am having the next seminar at Town Ford in East Wenatchee. Starting at 6 p.m. the seminar will feature Lou Nevsimal of Coulee Playland on Banks Lake. He will be giving everyone the details on the planned draw down of Banks Lake and how it will affect Banks Lake, Lake Roosevelt and Rufus Woods Reservoir. All appearing will be Shane Magnuson to talk about the Icicle River and summer-run salmon.

The Weekly Lake Chelan & NCW Fishing Report with Anton Jones of Darrell & Dad's |
| The gang from Pautzke's and their kokanee |
What continues hot is trolling Lake Chelan for Kokanee near Lakeside. Also hot is trolling below Mack Bar or the face of Manson Bay for Mackinaw. The kokanee bite continues as good as it can get in the lower basin of Lake Chelan. Although they are biting all over the lower basin the area near Lakeside Park is best.
Trolling those Mack's Lures mini Cha Cha Squidders and Kokanee Pro Wedding Rings rigged behind Mack's Lures Flash Lites caught loads of 10 and 11 inch Kokanee. Bait those presentations with Pautzke's Fire Corn in Natural and Orange.
Troll for Lakers either around the Bar or along the face of Manson Bay. U20 Flatfish by Worden's in Luminous Chartreuse is the order of the day
While Lake Chelan continues to fish great for Kokanee and Mackinaw, I am still salivating over the prospect of other great venues in our region. First, it's not too early to start loading up in anticipation of another banner Sockeye run this summer in the Upper Columbia. We are looking forward to a June 1st opener for Lahontan's at Grimes Lake and the Northern Ramp opening up on Omak. That's where I'll be on June 1st. Also, little Antilon Lake is fishing great for quality browns right here in the Chelan Valley.
Your fishing tip of the week is to work through the learning curve in using Silver Horde's Sam's Pro Release for deepwater trolling here on Chelan. The lack of false releases will keep your lures in the strike zone for a much longer time.
The kid's tip of the week is aimed right at those single Mom's that have boys. Remember, us men are pretty simple creatures. You really need to decide how the discipline is going to work for that boy when you enter into another relationship. If you want this guy to help you, you are going to have to live with a style that is not your own. If you just can't live with that, you can't complain when that boy seems just too difficult for you to manage. It can be a tough decision. But a clear delineation of duties will prevent a lot of friction in your relationship and be good for the boy in the long run. Letting the boy play you off against your guy can prove to be destructive in a couple of different ways.
Your safety tip of the week is to take your time with the driftwood out there. I've never seen such dense rafts of big, prop busting wood. Also, that rock pile off the boat club in Mill Bay will submerge during this week and is a real boat busting risk for the next few weeks.
