Wenatchee Valley Sports Council News

Eric Headshot B&WGreetings!

Have I mentioned I love my job?  I really do!  I chose to make the Wenatchee Valley my home and feel very fortunate to be able to make a living telling others about the beautiful place where I live.  I know there's plenty of you who'd rather me not spoil the secret by sharing it with others, but how about they just come and visit for a while?

If you haven't already, please bookmark our website as a favorite through your web browser.  I think it's pretty awesome and we're adding new stuff all the time.  OK, yes, I'm biased, but I HAVE to be.

In this issue, I have another Q&A, this time with Wenatchee Venom Coach Brian Smith about a new league; a recap on the 1st-ever Thunder Swamp sprint boat race; news from the Curling Club; some 3rd quarter numbers; great news on a fundraiser for the Foundation; and a project to restore sports murals along the waterfront.

And by the way, if you haven't already, please get out on the rivers in North Central Washington and take advantage of one of, if not THE largest run of salmon and steelhead the rivers have seen since the dams came in.  It's AMAZING!

I hope you enjoy the reading, maybe learn something new and share this with friends.

Happy Trails
Eric Granstrom - Wenatchee Valley Sports Council
New League and New Horizons for Wenatchee Valley Venom

The Wenatchee Valley Venom is busily preparing for its 2nd season of indoor football at Town Toyota Center.  2011 will feature a new league, new players and a renewed sense of providing an entertaining product for football fans in North Central Washington.  We had a chance to sit down with Venom head coach Brian Smith and chat about some of the changes taking place.

Q:  Brian, sounds like the Venom are heading in a new direction in 2011?
A:  We're moving up to the IFL, the Indoor Football League.  We were just recently voted in unanimously by the commission at the league meeting in Chicago.  We're excited for that because in my opinion it's definitely a step up in competition level as well as organizationally throughout the league.

Q:  This also sets up some nice matchups as far as closer travel for you too, doesn't it?
A:  There are more teams there.  There are closer teams to help the fan base and help us financially as far as travel.

Q:  I know Tri Cities has a team, but who else is closer to help out the Venom with shorter trips?
A:  Tri Cities is number one, but there's also Kent, Washington, so those will be our main two rivals.  We have to fly out to Fairbanks and play them, but we'll probably stay there for a eight days and knock out two of those games.

Q:  Was the travel component the most expensive thing the Venom faced as an organization in the first year of operation last year?
A:  It is.  The travel cost is our number one expense.  You just make due and thankfully we had great fan support here at home to help with that expense.

Q:  Another successful AIFA team over the past few years is also making the jump to the IFL in Wyoming, correct?
A:  Yes.  Wyoming was voted in the day after we were.  It's exciting because I really enjoy playing Wyoming.  They're a high-caliber team, they're usually very successful and it was one of our biggest wins this year when we went there and beat them in Wyoming and handed them their only league loss.  I'm excited that we'll have a chance to play them again.

Q:  What kind of differences will the fans see when they come out to see the Venom play in the IFL this year?
A:  I think the biggest difference they'll see is that the product on the field will be higher caliber of player they'll see out there and the coaching staffs are a little better as well.  Subtle rule changes they'll see is in the kicking game.  When we kicked off in our league last year, it was called the "Uno."  That is not existent in this league.  We'll be kicking the ball and it will have to stay in play.  So it will be better for the fans, because we'll have to return it ever time.

Q:  But will fans be able to keep the ball if it comes up in the stands?
A:  Most definitely.  When the ball goes out of play, it will be up for grabs!

Q:  What else are you doing in the off-season?
A:  I'm in the process of signing players off of last year's roster.  I've officially just re-signed Phil Goodman, who was our top receiver and one of our best players on our squad.  I'm also in the process of doing player-selection for everybody else that I want to bring into camp.

Q:  Are you going to hold any tryouts?
A:  Yes, the first tryout will be in East Wenatchee on Saturday, October 17th at Eastmont High School at 1 o'clock.  The second tryout will be at Curtis High School at University Place near Tacoma the following Saturday, October 24th, also at 1 o'clock.

Q:  Last year, there seemed to be some big gaps between home games.  What will the schedule look like this year?
A:  We have a little bit more control over the schedule this year.  One of the best parts is that we're going to start the season a month earlier, so our first game will be February 26th.  Starting earlier gets the season over before the nice weather comes around.  That's better for the fans because Wenatchee is such a pretty place to be and fans want to be outside when it's hot and not inside.

Q:  What's your message to fans that supported the team last year and are wondering about what the new league will be like this year?
A:  First of all, I want to thank the fans that we have and that showed up and supported us all year long.  We're going to promise a great product out there and it's going to be very exciting and high-paced.  We're a Wenatchee team and we're going to represent Wenatchee.  We're looking to improve on last year and bring more people out to watch us play.

Wenatchee will be part of the five-team Pacific North Division of the Indoor Football League which includes the Tri Cities Fever, Kent Predators and the Billings Outlaws.  In all, there are 26-teams in the IFL and six divisions.  The Outlaws won this year's United Bowl over Sioux Falls.

East Wenatchee's "Thunder Swamp"..Almost Ready

(Wenatchee, WA)...The Wenatchee Curling Club hosted a first-ever bonspiel, or curling competition, at Town Toyota Center September 17-18 and it was a rousing success.  Curling Club President Roger Carlson says 8-teams competed in the inaugural Wenatchee event, "which was a dry run for a future bonspiel to include teams from throughout the northwest."

Swamp Racing

Despite a gusting wind and blowing dust, tons of people showed up to see the spectacle that is United States Sprint Boat Racing Saturday.  The three-week-old course proved challenging from the get-go.  Jeepers Creepers was the first team on the Thunder Swamp course and quickly clipped an island and wound up rolling onto its side. A survey of those who came found an overwhelming "thumbs up", especially the majority who saw their first-ever sprint boat race. "That was awesome!" was a familiar refrain. In fact, a few on their way out said they were going to buy a boat and start racing too.

At this week's City Council meeting, it was reported the first sprint boat race in East Wenatchee lost more than 70-thousand dollars.  But Events Board Director Dawn Collings says dollars and cents don't tell the story of what a successful venture "Thunder Swamp" actually was.

Collings gave a review of the September 4th event during East Wenatchee's City Council meeting last night.  She says while the city's investment may jump out, what should be noted is the community's in-kind and cash investment of over 200-thousand dollars.  Collings says the majority of the first-race losses came from the up-front, one-time costs of building the course.  She said, "now that it's done, all we have to do is hold another race."
Mayor Steve Lacy commended Collings, city staff and the Thunder Swamp committee for putting on the inaugural race with only 6-week's notice once they got the final go-ahead from Douglas County.  Two races are being planned on the site near Pangborn Memorial Airport in 2011.

First-Ever Bonspiel a Success

(Wenatchee, WA)...The Wenatchee Curling Club hosted a first-ever bonspiel, or curling competition, at Town Toyota Center September 17-18 and it was a rousing success.  Curling Club President Roger Carlson says 8-teams competed in the inaugural Wenatchee event, "which was a dry run for a future bonspiel to include teams from throughout the northwest."

Local teams battled in four flights over two days with "Team Brown" (Dave Brown, Eric Brown, Rob Knutson & Nick Martinez) finishing in first place.  2nd place went to "Team Sexton" (Greg Sexton, Case Kwak, Sherry Roberts, Pat Helman & Brian Barclay).

Carlson said he really wanted to thank the Town Toyota Center staff for going above and beyond to help make the Early Bird Bonspiel happen.  "We had the best ice we've ever had to curl on," said Carlson.  "Eddy (Mattson) and his crew helped us realign the sheets over the summer to move them closer to the middle and not have so much space between them and it really made a huge difference," Carlson added.

The Wenatchee Curling Club will host a "Learn to Curl" event this Sunday, October 3rd, starting at 4:30pm.  Cost is $15 per curler with a maximum of 32 curlers allowed, so if you're interested, you'd better sign up by calling Greg Sexton at 630-3040 or go on-line to www.wenatcheecurlingclub.com for more information.

Sangter Motors Supports Foundation With Car Sale

(Wenatchee, WA)...Sangster Motors in Wenatchee donated a portion of car sales the week of September 21-25 to benefit the Wenatchee Valley Sports Foundation.  It was part of Sangster's "Community Sales Event" with special pricing on new and used vehicles on the lot.

"This is fantastic," said Wenatchee Valley Sports Foundation Chair Dan Kelly.  "This comes at a time when we could really use some help with the Foundation.  We've been doing a lot of giving but not a lot of fundraising over the past year.  Besides the softball tournament (O'Terry's in August), we don't have any money coming in," said Kelly.  Kelly is referring to the adult, co-ed softball tournament the Foundation runs in August.  It drew a total of 40-teams this year, with the Wenatchee Valley Sports Foundation netting nearly $4,000.

Amy Gustin with the ADG Media Group brought the idea of having Sangster's Community Sales Event benefit the Sports Foundation.  "I worked with the Foundation over a year ago, trying to develop some fundraising ideas and I have Sangster's as a client, so it just seemed a natural fit," said Gustin.

Sangster Motors is located on the corner of 9th and Miller in Wenatchee and is open Monday-Friday 8am-6:30pm and Saturday 9am-5pm.  For more information on the WV Sports Foundation, go to www.wvsportsfoundation.org.

Preserving Sports History in Wenatchee, A Panel At A Time

(Wenatchee, WA)...There's still a chance to help preserve the murals on the side of Columbia Colstor's warehouse along the Wenatchee waterfront.  Colstor came to the Sports Council back in June asking for help finding sponsors to kick in $1,000 per panel to preserve the old Ridge to River murals on the east side of its warehouse along the new Riverside Drive.  And to their credit, several local businesses stepped up to the plate.

Colstor Painting Project

First, Mission Ridge was one of the original sponsors that put the murals on the side of the warehouse and said they would re-up.  Then came Sangster Motors; BioSports Physical Therapy; the Wenatchee AppleSox; Columbia River Media Group (KKRV, KKRT, KWIQ & KWLN); and finally Coca-Cola.  But it looks like there's still one more spot for your business.

Colstor received a bid from Terry Signs to paint the building and the murals with an estimate of $1,000 per panel to freshen up the old murals and add new logos for sponsoring businesses.  Sangster Motors will go under the old "RRR" mural representing Ridge to River Relay on the south end.  Next to it is the cross-country skier sponsored by BioSports.  Then comes the downhill skier sponsored by, of course, Mission Ridge Ski & Board Resort.  Coca-Cola's logo will be under the runner while the AppleSox name will appear under the cyclist.  Columbia River Media Group's 4-logos will appear beneath the kayaker at an additional rate because of the extra designs.  And then, on the north end, is a picture of two people carrying a canoe upside down.  Those familiar with Ridge to River recognize this mural to represent the portage at the race's finish line.  And, this spot could be yours for the mere price of $1,000.  As a thank you to the Wenatchee Valley Sports Council for helping find sponsors, Columbia Colstor has offered to include the Council's logo in the middle where the old Ridge to River is now.

If you'd like to sponsor the final panel, contact the Sports Council at 509-663-3723 or sports@wenatcheevalley.org.  Project coordinator Kim Bettencourt with Colstor says, "even if we don't have that final panel paid for, we'll paint it and add a sponsor later."  The Sports Council got involved when its Board of Directors voted in June to have Director of Marketing Eric Granstrom help out if Colstor couldn't get the original mural sponsors to fund the project.

Hotels Should Be Happy But Sports Impacts Were Down

(Wenatchee, WA)...What was gained in spring was lost during the summer.  That's the word from Wenatchee Valley Sports Council Marketing Director Eric Granstrom after researching sports events in the area.  "It was a great second quarter," Granstrom said, "thanks in large part to a huge influx of new events such as the Robertson Cup, Spring Ski Series at Mission Ridge and Triple Crown Baseball."  "But according to the data collected from events held July-September, the 15% gain in the 2nd quarter over 2009 was dealt a blow by an 11% loss in the 3rd quarter," said Granstrom.

One of the largest reasons for the drop, according to Granstrom, was the cancellation of several softball tournaments.  "We had five fewer softball tournaments this summer than we did last year and three that were on the books didn't take place," said Granstrom.  According to the research, sports events held between July and September accounted for an estimated $1.18-million this year, compared to $1.33-million in 2009.  For the year, the estimation by the Sports Council is that sports impacts are down 11% from over $7-million in 2009 to $6.2-million this year.  "And unfortunately," predicted Granstrom, "I don't see events on the books over the final three months that will make up the difference."

The good news is that while sports impacts might be off for the third quarter, hotel visitation has picked up.  According to Smith Travel Research of hotel data throughout Washington, the Wenatchee market saw an increase in demand, occupancy and revenue for the summer months June through July.  "According to what I read," said Granstrom, "the report (STR) had hotels in Wenatchee and East Wenatchee up 9.5% over last summer to over $6.2-million in revenue."  Granstrom suggests the increased demand for outdoor recreation (fishing, hiking, biking), wine tours and good, sunny weather has resulted in the Wenatchee Valley becoming more of a destination similar to Chelan and Leavenworth.
