Wenatchee Valley Sports Council News
Greetings!
I had the unbelievable opportunity to be in Vancouver for the entire Winter Olympics. It was amazing! I'll have more on my experience in this month's newsletter.
The pace of events coming and going has folks rubbing their necks around here lately! We'll try to catch you up to date on the latest on the Duathlon, DAM2DAM, and some new fun stuff coming our way. And, the East Wenatchee City Council has given the go-ahead on sprint boat racing for this summer! The quote from Drew Reiners of Triple Crown Baseball was, "I'll be happy if we get 25 this first year out." He was referring to the Spring Kickoff Baseball Tournament set for April 9-10 in the Wenatchee Valley. I checked with Drew this week and he said he has 68 teams already paid!
It's also transition time. Winter sports wrap up this weekend with State Basketball, the Wenatchee Wild wrap up the regularson season and enter the playoffs, spring practice is underway, WVC baseball and softball gear up and the Venom and Ram football teams begin play soon. OH! And the race schedule begins at the Super Oval before you know it.
Enjoy the newsletter, send it to a friend, and have a great March!
Happy Trails Eric Granstrom - Wenatchee Valley Sports Council |

Sprint Boats are Coming to East Wenatchee!
By a 3-2 vote, the East Wenatchee City Council has approved a proposal to host two Sprint Boat races this summer and to lease property for a course off the end of 10th Street.
East Wenatchee Events Board Director Dawn Collings organized a meet and greet for dignitaries and US Spring Boat officials March 4th.
East Wenatchee Mayor Steve Lacy (pictured at right with owner/drive Paul Gahr) says he's "...very optimistic by the enthusiasm shown by City Council and the community to bring this event to the area."
The proposed land to be used to build the sprint boat racing track is owned by Brian Vickery. He said he never imagined a use like this for his property, which he says, "is for sale by the way," with a laugh. Providing organizers can get proper permits from Douglas County, the course would be trenched into the landscape on Vickery's property and designed similar to a track in Albury, Australia (see photo below).
If all goes according to plan, the first sprint boat race would be held in East Wenatchee over the July 4th weekend this summer. For more information on Sprint Boat Racing, go to their website at www.ussbaracing.com. Also, for incredible video footage, following this link and hold on to your hats! |

Venom and Rams to Satiate Your Football Desires
For those football-crazy fans in North Central Washington who dread the period after the Superbowl and before training camp, your answer is as close as the Wenatchee Valley Venom and Wenatchee Valley Rams.
Traditionalists will prefer the outdoor venue at Eastmont's Wildcat Stadium where the Rams begin its 6th season in Washington Football League play this spring. Wenatchee Valley is coming off a WFL Championship and ready to contend again in 2010. For the Rams complete schedule, go to www.wvrams.com. The Rams first home game is March 13th against Umatilla at 1pm.
New-age football fanatics will be introduced to an entirely different kind of game in late March when the Wenatchee Valley Venom begin play in the American Indoor Football Association at Town Toyota Center. The field is only 50-yards long and scores average in the 60's. Go to www.wenatcheevenom.com for information. The season begins March 20th at home against the Yakima Valley Warriors. There is only one date that overlaps between the Rams and Venom schedule, and that is March 20th. But even still, the Rams kick off at 1pm while the Venom kick off at 7pm...so you could realistically do both! |
An Amazing Experience I Won't Soon Forget
I've been in radio for 21-years and have been promoting Wenatchee Valley Sports for three, but my assigment of going to the Winter Olympics is the best I've ever received.
From February 11-28 I imerced myself in the Canadian way of life, living in Burnaby (just outside Vancouver). My "job" while there was to promote North Central Washington through the marketing group E3NCW. I also did radio reports on Sunny FM here in Washington and 107 The Ranch in Missoula, Montana. I also did video blogs for the E3NCW website and wrote a blog on the Wenatchee World's website. To say the least, I was busy!
My experience was magnificent! My Canadians hosts were unbelievably kind and generous and Vancouver did a fantastic job hosting the world. My highlight (of many) was getting to see the US vs. Switzerland in men's hockey and go to a medals ceremony where Canadian Clara Hughes became the most-decorated Olympian in Canadian history.
I also had a small army of volunteers who helped collect video and promote NCW while in Vancouver for the Games too. Thanks to Casey, Matty, Marc and Remington in the Methow, to Jay in Leavenworth, to Barbara in Wenatchee and to Kelli and Teka in Monitor. If you'd like to see our videos, go to www.e3ncw.com. |
