Wenatchee Valley Sports Council News
Greetings!
As we approach the half-way mark of summer, I start to get that panicky feeling that I'm running out of time. To do what? Well, RELAX for one! So do what I'm trying to do...put some of the projects down, rest, and enjoy time with loved ones.
Welcome to the Wenatchee Valley Venom, the valley's new indoor football team! Congratulations to the Wenatchee Valley Rams, winners of the WFL title. And, if you haven't noticed, the AppleSox are atop the division standings...AGAIN! The Super Oval is putting out some pretty exciting racing as well. So much for RELAXING with our free time, huh?!
Thanks to Phil Maher and Andi Jo Stump for coming out to Olympic Day June 23rd and to the City of Wenatchee and Chelan PUD for helping to make it happen. Thanks to all who applied for our open board position with the Sports Council. Our search committee will make recommendations to the board on July 14th. And, while I'm saying thank you, let me say thanks to the Wenatchee Valley Humane Society for finding our dog "Nicky." The pooch headed for the hills Friday night and spent the weekend in the hoosegow.
Send this on to others who don't get it and encourage them to sign up to receive the newsletter each month. In addition, as you know, we put out the weekend reminders to help with your planning. Enjoy and stop by our new office when you get a chance at 5 S. Wenatchee Avenue. Happy Trails Eric Granstrom - Wenatchee Valley Sports Council |

Wenatchee Valley Venom to Play Football in 2010
Wenatchee's Town Toyota Center has a new tenant...the Wenatchee Valley Venom indoor football team. At an announcement June 15th, 2 of the seven owners were present along with representatives with the American Indoor Football Association and their choice for coach, Keith Evans.
Co-owner Mark Helms said the Venom will play in the AIFA's West Division in 2010, with 8 games being played at Town Toyota Center. He said the group had been working on finalizing the deal for 8-months before the announcement was made. "We could have announced in January, but we wanted to have everything ironed out before we got here," said Helms. Why Venom? "We wanted something representative of the area...not just something off the wall, so we thought of snakes, of scorpions...Venom, yeah, there we go!"
Wenatchee will join teams in Wyoming, New Mexico and two in Utah as part of the AIFA's West Division. The season runs from mid-March to the end of June, with the playoffs in July. According to AIFA Chief Operating Officer and League Co-Owner Michael Mink, "Wenatchee put together a very impressive ownership group with a strong financial background...and the Town Toyota Center will immediately be a showpiece site in the league."
Coach Keith Evans has plenty of experience in the indoor league, having played and coached in all levels, including in the Tri Cities and Portland. He said he already has a good line on players to join the Venom. "We will have a tryout for local talent, but I'll be bringing in veteran guys who have already played in the league and know the style of football I like to play."
The Venom will play indoors at Town Toyota Center on a 50-yard field with 8-players per side, 3-downs for a first down and no punting. Mink says the AIFA game is "fast-paced family fun. It's exciting and what I call a mixture of hockey, basketball and football all in one."
Tickets are on-sale now through Town Toyota Center. In fact, TTC is offering a package deal on season tickets for Wenatchee Wild hockey and Wenatchee Valley Venom football. Call 667-7VIP for more information.

Congratulations Rams!
The Wenatchee Valley Rams defeated Spokane 14-7 June 13th to claim the Washington Football League Championship. It was the first league title in team history.
Wenatchee's victory earned the Rams homefield for the cross-state game with the Oregon Football League Champion,Portland. The Rams jumped out to an early lead but couldn't hold it, falling 33-21. Wenatchee's home field at Wildcat Field in East Wenatchee was also host to the WFL/OFL All-Star game prior to the title game. Wenatchee finished the season 10-and-3. |
Olympic Day Brings Out Youth in Wenatchee
A "Chamber of Commerce" day greeted runners, walkers and Olympians to Olympic Day at Walla Walla Point Park June 23rd. The gorgeous sunshine provided a perfect backdrop for 1984 Gold Medal winner Phil Maher and current US Olympic hopeful Andi Jo Stump to talk to nearly 50-children gathered.
As proclaimed by Wenatchee Mayor Dennis Johnson and retold by city councilman Don Gurnard, "Olympic movement has built a more peaceful and better world by educating young people through amateur athletics, by bringing together athletes from many countries in friendly competition, and by forging new relationships bound by friendship, solidarity, and fair play."
Of the 51 participants who ran or walked the 1/2 mile course along the Apple Capital Loop Trail, most were children. A ceremonial baton was handed from councilman Gurnard to Maher, then Stump and onto the participants in the event.
Prior to their departure, Maher and Stump talked one-on-one with the children about their experience at the international level and what it takes to be an Olympian. The most common question among the wide-eyed juveniles present had to do with falling and how much it hurts.
Maher has been known to offer his '84 Gold Medal to groups to auction off as a fundraiser. Of course, he gets it back after a period of time. He relayed his experience of working so hard to win the gold and how special it was to hear the Star Spangled Banner played during the medal ceremony.
Stump says she hopes to be there some day as well. She is competing on the world stage as a snowboarder and is proud to call the Wenatchee Valley her home and to be able to train at Mission Ridge.
Olympic Day was also a chance for a local marketing group to highlight its efforts to promote North Central Washington during the Winter Games in Vancouver, B.C. E3NCW has been focusing marketing on the Vancouver area, searching for those wanting to "Escape" during the Olympic Games. The marketing up and down the I-5 corridor in Western Washington, the Washington State Ferries and Sea-Tac Airport is also aimed at inviting visitors to "Explore" North Central Washington and "Enjoy" what they find when they get here. Information can be found at www.E3NCW.com. |
King Fishing Heats Up on Columbia River
As you can see by the picture at right of Sports Council Boardmember and "Fishing Magician" Dave Graybill, salmon fishing opened July 1st on the Upper Columbia River. Dave landed this beauty on opening day just below Wanapum Dam.
In addition to catching summer-run Chinook, anglers can keep sockeye salmon. Be sure to check WDFW rules and regulations before heading for the water. |
Time Running Out to Get Into O'Terry's Tournament
The 34th Annual O'Terry's Lads & Lasses co-ed softball tournament is just around the corner and registrations are now being accepted. Cost for a team is $225 with a give-game guarantee.
The longest running tournament of its kinds in the Wenatchee Valley is slated for August 15th and 16th at both Walla Walla Point and Kirby Billingsley Hydro Parks.
As of July 7th, 25 teams had registered from all over Washington State. Tournament Director Eric Granstrom says he'd like to cap registration at 32 teams to make scheduling easier, so those wishing to get in had better do so quickly.
Registration forms are available on our Foundation's website at www.wvsportsfoundation.org. Or, you can click the logo here to get a direct download of the registration form. In addition, as an added convenience, teams can pay their entry fee via credit card (Visa/MasterCard/Discover) over the phone by calling 1-800-572-7753. |
A Cancellation and a Postponement It looks like the Hot August Days bike ride has gone along the wayside. According to Retired Senior Volunteer Program Executive Director Brian Ropp, only two entries had been received by the end of June, so this year's ride was cancelled. RSVP runs Hot August Days as well as the Wenatchee Valley Duathlon, Alcoa's Ridge to River and the Junior Ridge to River events as fundraisers.
In an email from Ropp, he said "the numbers haven't been where they need to be, and I had always said if we weren't up to 200 riders within 5 years we need to drop it...it's been 6 years."
In addition, a fundraiser for the Wenatchee Valley Sports Foundation has been postponed, due to a lack of sponsorship. The Wenatchee Valley Sips & Suds Wine and Ale Festival was slated for August 14-15 at Town Toyota Center, but organizers had difficulty finding sponsors to support start-up costs. Foundation Chair Dan Kelly said, "I still believe it's a great event that will work in Wenatchee...it's just we couldn't go forward without sponsors at this time."
Instead, the group is planning a smaller event on August 15th for players in the O'Terry's softball tournament, such as a beer garden at Walla Walla Point Park.
