Greetings!
Would someone please tell me where summer went?! It's hard to believe that August is already here...and yes, the 100-degree temperatures.
It has been a busy sports summer here in the Wenatchee Valley and we've done our best to stay on top of it for you. Enjoy this issue of the newsletter as its jammed packed with the latest news and gossip on the Wenatchee Valley Sports World.
And, before summer's over, get out and spend some time with the kids in the great outdoors! Those are your marching orders. Happy Trails Eric Granstrom - Wenatchee Valley Sports Council |

GWREC No More...Welcome "Town Toyota Arena" The moniker that no one cared for is finally gone. Exit "Greater Wenatchee Regional Events Center" and enter "Town Toyota Arena." The announcement was made August 1st at a press conference at the construction site of the new multi-purpose arena.
Tom Barros (pictured with Wenatche City Councilman Don Gurnard), owner of Town Auto Group, said "...it feels great to do such a good thing for the community."
According to Linda Haglund, Town Toyota signed a five-year commitment for the naming rights of the 4,300-seat facility adjacent to Walla Walla Point Park. "It's a private contract right now...you'll have to wait until it's public to find out," was Haglund's response to a question from the crowd gathered about how much was paid for the naming rights.
The arena is still slated for substantial completion by the contract deadline of September 17th. Global Entertainment, the management firm of the arena, is working on a grand opening and ribbon cutting ceremony for the first week of October. |
Fish On! Sockeye Opens on Lake Wenatchee For the first time since 2004, anglers were able to ply the waters of Lake Wenatchee for sockeye salmon this morning (Aug. 6).
According to early reports on the Lake Wenatchee website ( www.lakewenatcheeinfo.com) and phone reports from Dave Graybill "The Fishin' Magician," limits of two sockeye were not hard to come by. The catch is being closely monitored by the Washington State Department of Fish & Wildlife. According to a press release dated August 5th, 24,000 sockeye had been counted over Tumwater Dam on the Wenatchee River. 23,000 are needed for escapement and spawning.
Anglers are allowed two sockeye per day a minimum of 12-inches. According to the release, " No more than three barbless hooks may be used. No bait or sent may be attached to the hooks. Bull trout, steelhead, Chinook salmon and colored tagged sockeye must be released unharmed without removing the fish from the water. Knotless nets are required. A night closure will be in effect. Legal angling hours are one hour before sunrise to one hour after sunset."

Biz Buzz Will Boost Tourneys in Wenatchee Despite a downward trend in the nation's economy, the Wenatchee Valley continues to buzz right along. Construction of two new restaurants and the planned construction of two new hotels will do nothing but help the valley's effort to adequately host sports events and tournaments.
Sonic will be the first to come on-line. The drive-in is scheduled to open around August 25th, according to Area Manager Matt Thesenvitz. Sonic is currently hiring staff for its restaurant at the corner of Walnut and North Wenatchee Avenue.
Jack in the Box is expected to finish construction of its new restaurant at Chelan and 5th by the end of September.
Another big cog in the wheel of Wenatchee commerce is the hotel planned just across the street from Sonic, Spring Hill Suites by Marriott.
Sterling Hospitality, the Spokane company which owns Wenatchee's Holiday Inn Express, announced its plans for the Spring Hill construction in late June. According to company officials, they hope to break ground and begin construction this fall and be up and running by June of 2009.
At an unveiling of the company's plans, the four-story hotel will feature 109-rooms, beginning at a price of around $100. Below is an artist's rendering of the hotel which will reach out to "business travelers." Total cost of the project is approximately $13-million. In addition to the Spring Hill Suites planned for Wenatchee, another 99-room hotel is in the works for East Wenatchee, at the foot of 3rd Street near Costco and Town Toyota. Building permits are currently being sought by Gill Diamond Hospitality and owner Ganta Singh, who currently own and operate Cedars Inn, Best Western Chieftain Inn, Comfort Inn and Value Inn. |
New Interactive On-Line Map Now Available!
Ever tried to find a quick guide to camping, fishing and outdoor recreation sites near the Wenatchee Valley? Yea, me too...and boy was it frustrating! That is until now.
Thanks to Google Maps, we've created a one-stop-shop for all your camping, fishing and golfing interests on one, easy to use map. Go to the Sports Council's website and follow the link. You'll find a quick resource tool and great information on RV campgrounds, fishing lakes and streams and golf courses within an hour's drive of the Wenatchee Valley.
And, thanks to Dave Graybill, "The Fishin' Magician," fishing sites all include information about species available, best time of year to fish and what approach to use. Visitors to the site will also find boat launches and great swimming beaches.
In the past, a person trying to find this information had to go to 'umpteen' different websites of the recreation owners, such as the Forest Service, State, County, City or private sector to learn about each. Now, it's all on one site. And, if you want to get closer in to find more and more information, just click on the (+) sign on the left column to zoom in. The interactive map is a free service available to visitors and residents alike, from the Wenatchee Valley Sports Council and the Wenatchee Valley Visitors Bureau.
And, if you know of another great camping or fishing spot to add to the list, email me today - eric@wenatcheevalley.org. |
