Construction Continues on Regional Events Center
Snow and cold weather has not hampered construction of the Greater Wenatchee Regional Events Center. As of December 31st, Back of House, the entire North Wall and most of the East Wall had been erected, in addition to several base forms for the grandstands in the inner bowl.

Crews were given a well-deserved break over the holidays but were expected back at it today. As you can see by the zone map of the project (provided by Project Manager Rober Knowles), construction began on zone 6 (Back of House) and then along the outer wall of zones 1, 2, 3 & 4.

Linda Haglund, Director of Marketing and Sales for Global Entertainment, says every new piece of concrete that goes up brings more and more enthusiasm for the project. She reports phones have been ringing steadily since the giant, blue crane showed up on site in mid-December.

According to Project Manager Robert Knowles, Hunt Construction is right on schedule and feels very confident about a projected completion date of September 17th, 2008. Haglund says they're already working on an opening extravaganza.

2008 Sports Outlook is Bright The calendar is jammed full of sports events in the new year. It begins this month with ski racing at Mission Ridge followed by a huge AAU basketball tournament and ends with a figure skating exhibition. And that's just the tip of the ice berg of the 2008 year in sports for the Wenatchee Valley.
Add in the buzz over construction of a 4,300 seat indoor sports arena in Wenatchee and a possible indoor/outdoor facility in East Wenatchee and we're wearing shades around the office here at the Sports Council.
This year won't be without its controversy, however. The future of the Valley's Apple Capital Loop Trail will hinge on findings of a firm inspecting the Wenatchee Reclamation Bridge. A determination could render the bridge unusable by pedestrians, thus crushing the South end connector of "The Loop." Expect a decision by February or March.
2008 marks the return of the Squilchucker Mountain Bike Race. On hiatus since 2003, the Squilchucker has been resurrected by Jason Jablonski and others and will be held June 14th at Squilchuck State Park.
It's an election year in Olympia and in Washington , D.C., and the Sports Council will be working closely with Washington Association of Sports Councils to lobby on behalf of funding legislation for sports and recreation facilities throughout the Wenatchee Valley. We'll also be guiding efforts locally to expand facilities and encourage the utilization of public/private partnerships to do so.
Finally, with all things sports happening in the Wenatchee Valley, the Sports Council will be tracking it all to quantify what economic benefits result. Stay tuned and share this Newsletter to spread the word of what's happening in the Wenatchee Valley. |

You probably already knew that the number one resolution of any New Year is to lose weight.
But did you know how to do it with just ordinary, everyday stuff?
The depressing statistic is that you have to burn 3,500 calories ABOVE & BEYOND what you normally burn to lose O N E P O U N D!
But don't panic! Here's a chart that may make you feel a little bit better:
Activity *Calories
Brushing Teeth - 7
Kissing (30-min.) - 40
Sleeping 8 hrs. - 60
Doing Dishes - 87
Playing Cards - 67
Mopping Floor - 170
Vacuuming - 170
Grocery Shop - 138
Walking Dog - 337
In fact, playing the Nintendo Wii is proving a great way to burn calories. Play Wii Sports and burn 150 calories boxing, 95 calories playing tennis or 77 calories bowling for 15-minutes.
So who says playing video games is bad for you?!
This is just a few helpful factoids to keep a stiff upper lip when trying to stick with your resolution to lose weight in 2008.
If you'd like to check out a cool calorie calculator, try this website.
*based on 170lb person doing these activies for 30-minutes. |
