2009/10: A Season of Give and Take

February 2009
Greetings!

2008 was a challenging and successful year for Flux Theatre Ensemble. We produced five plays, developed many more, and were named one of nytheatre.com's People of the Year.  Outside the theatre, our country's historic election gave hope of fundamental change for the better.

But as 2009 continues its economic downward spiral, and America draws down from one war to escalate another, the change remains certain but its destination grows unclear. What can theatre give in a time when so much can be taken away? Into that uncertainty we put forth our Season of Give and Take, and ask again for your support to make it possible.

And don't forget to join us Friday February 20th as Flux participates in The Battle of the Bards!

Battle of the Bards

Battle1

Join Flux on February 20th as we participate in Partial Comfort Production's 4th Annual Battle of The Bards. The one-night-only competition pits New York theatre companies against one another to write, rehearse and stage a world premiere one-act play that incorporates the use of a prop that will be selected by current Speed-the-Plow star William H. Macy. The plays will be judged by a celebrity panel including playwrights Suzan Lori-Parks (Topdog/Underdog) and David Auburn (Proof); actors John Slatterly ("Mad Men") and Daniel Sunjata (Take Me Out) and Time Out New York journalist David Cote. For tickets, ranging $15-$75, phone (212) 352-3101. Battle of the Bards will take place at the Canal Room, located at 285 West Broadway and Canal Street in Manhattan.

An additional award will be given to the audience favorite, so join us and holler for Flux!

As we venture into our 2009-10 season during these challenging economic times, we need the support of our friends, family and dedicated audience more than ever. To help us with a tax-deductible contribution, click here. And a big thank you to those of you who have already given so generously!

Why give to Flux? Just look at what we were able to accomplish last year with your help:

-We were named one of nytheatre.com's "People of the Year"

-The New York Press called Flux "The Most Underappreciated Indie Theatre Whose Work You Should Get Your Ass To"

-We received a grant from the Lower Manhattan Cultural Council to help support our production of A Midsummer Night's Dream and The Imagination Compact

-We produced three plays in rep! Our ambitious Angel Eaters Trilogy, which involved over 50 artists, was named "Pick of the Week" by nytheatre.com

-Backstage magazine made our production of A Midsummer Night's Dream a "pick,"  calling it a "production of engaging lucidity and immediacy"

-August Schulenburg's Other Bodies played to sold-out audiences at the NY International Fringe Festival and Flux member Heather Cohn won a Fringe Excellence Award for "Outstanding Direction"

-We received an Organizational Development Grant from Fractured Atlas

-We became members of the Alliance of Resident Theatres/New York and The Network of Ensemble Theaters

-We continued our workshop projects Flux Sundays, Have Another and Food:Soul, helping to develop over fifty plays.
