International Roaming - Cost Savings |
Mobile international roaming allows you to keep in touch, and be contactable when travelling overseas. However, the costs of roaming a very high and here are a few tips to limit your expenditure:
- Keep calls short - because you will be charged for both incoming and outgoing calls.
- Use SMS where possible
- Don't leave your phone on all the time.
- Set an Unconditional Diversion to Voicemail before you leave Australia. Then periodically check your Voicemail. Alternatively tell the caller to send you an SMS.
- Avoid downloading large amounts of data. Turn data roaming off. Use WiFi where possible
- Use an international SIM. See our article about TravelSIM or click on the following link http://www.telcoplus.com.au/mobile-international-roaming.html
Activate international Roaming before you leave and check that your handset is compatible with networks of countries you are visiting. |
Do Not Call! |
"AUSTRALIANS who believed their home phone numbers were permanently protected from unsolicited marketing calls by joining the Do Not Call database may find themselves receiving fresh phone sales pitches next year, as the first entries on the national register expire." according to The Age on 23/11/2009. "More than 4 million telephone numbers will be registered on the government database by the end of this year if growth patterns continue. But the three-year time limit on registrations will lapse for more than 1 million numbers, initially listed when the database opened in May 2007."
"Those who fail to renew numbers will then be considered fair game by telemarketers that regularly refresh telephone databases by correlating the numbers on the Do Not Call register with their own."
"The Australian Communications and Media Authority is confident that subscribers who want phone numbers to stay on the register will follow reminders to renew them. Numbers can be renewed ahead of time on the donotcall.gov.au website or by phoning 1300 792 958." |

TravelSIM Roadtest |
 |
TravelSIM has proven to be an excellent way of cutting international roaming costs. We tested it out on a trip to Europe. You put the TravelSIM in your phone, activate the service and you can top up credit via your credit card via their website. The SIM registered with networks on the way through Singapore, Dubai and all over Europe. You dial the number then wait for your phone to ring back then the call is connected. For example, in Italy, incoming calls were free and we could dial Australia for 65 cents per minute and send texts for 43 cents each.
