2012 Canadian Reception Cancelled
As the show schedule is jam-packed this year, the HPBA Canada Board of Directors elected to put the Canadian Reception on hiatus again. We were struggling to find a time to host the event and we certainly don't want to miss the exciting events that HPBA has planned for this year.

If you haven't heard there's a Tailgate Party and Big Green Egg Celebrity Chef Cook-Off on Thursday, March 1st from 5:00 pm to 6:30 pm and on Friday from 8:00 pm to 11:00 pm the Honky Tonkin' Industry Party takes place. You won't want to miss the Vesta Awards on Friday beginning at 6:00 pm either. Don't forget to vote for the Attendees Choice Award. Go to www.hpbexpo.com to download the mobile app.

Government Affairs Update

Government Affairs, Regulations, Legislation and Standards

2011 was of course another very busy year for those engaged in the association's government affairs efforts. It was also a year in which the association started to restructure itself to better meet these and other challenges. There are now active GA affairs committees in every chapter as well as at the national level and recently the hours worked by our national part time staff member, Erika Pollock have been increased to as to support the expansion of our GA activities. If funding allows we will

continue this trend next year.

These are some of the issues with we are currently engaged:

  • Gas fireplace efficiency testing and the possible introduction of mandated minimum efficiency levels.
  • Increased regulation of wood burning appliances at the municipal level of government.
  • Updates to several provincial residential wood burning regulations.
  • Wood stove change out programs in BC, Quebec, Ontario with others planned.
  • House depressurisation and the impact of associated risk mitigation.
  • Proposed changes to the national building code regarding vent clearance distances.
  • Positioning of hearth products in various green building codes.
  • The concept of Net Zero as a new build energy standard and its impact on our industry's.appliances.
  • Numerous CSA Codes and Standards.

Tremendous thanks must go to all our volunteer members who give so freely of their time and expertise. Thanks also to everyone of our members. Just by being part of the HPBA Canada family, you are supporting these efforts.

 Gas Fireplaces and Zone Heating

Please follow this link

for an interesting article from the National Housing Research Committee based on the results of a study conducted by the Canadian Centre for Housing Technology in their Twin Houses in Ottawa. The association considers this a somewhat one sided and indeed one dimensional view of the energy efficiency implications of heating a room with a gas fireplace.

The association has entered into discussions with Natural Resources Canada with a view to conducting more thorough, scientifically based, research on the benefits of zone heating. We believe, and are determined to illustrate, that zone heating, and therefore our industry, has an important role to play in tomorrow's green building standards.
