Manufacturers Update November 2007
Newfoundland and Nova Scotia Update

As from July 1st 2008 it will no longer be legal to sell or manufacture non EPA/B415 wood burning fireplaces, stoves and inserts in the province of Newfoundland and Labrador.

HPBAC concluded however that the status of standard exempt products was not made clear in the new legislation. We therefore sought clarification on this point and can now confirm that such product can still be legally sold after July 1st. They are exempt from the legislation. These products include masonary fireplaces and heaters, decorative fireplaces and fireplaces with a minimum burn rate above 5 Kg per hour.

Similar legislation is being introduced in Nova Scotia. The proposed introduction date is October 1st of this year. HPBAC is pressing for this date to be put back to January 1st 2009 so as to allow our members time to dispose of existing inventory.

We are also seeking clarification on the same point as in Newfoundland.

Sincerely,

Tony Gottschalk, HPBAC
