Namaste!

So who said, "Experience is what you get when you don't get what you want?"  Ok, I don't really care who said it, because at the moment its true-ness is downright irritating.

This was to be, with the exception of my Wednesday class, an entire week off.  A staycation.  A week of yoga classes and climbing, hiking and catching up with friends.  Instead, it has been a week of sleepless nights, a pounding headache and fiery sore throat, all the while hacking up a lung (or two).   Not exactly Nirvana.

Ever in search of a silver lining lesson, last night I stopped griping for a hot minute in order to look at what this is all about.  Usually when I fall ill, it's from an extended period of not listening to the inner voice calling "slow down" or endless weeks of burning the candle at both ends.  But this has a slightly different flavor.

In the same way I am prone to overwork, I wanted to fill this week to the brim with fun and friends.  Apparently what I needed was to take that staycation and Sit.  Read.  Rest.  Listen.  And close this eventful year with a reflective pause.  As we learn on this path, if we don't find balance on our own, Nature will do it for us.  And here I am.

I have been so intent (read: intense) on creating balance in my life by mixing fun into this life of work that I love, that I forgot the most important balancing factor of all:  Space.  Nothing.  Stillness.

Got it.

Peace to you and yours as we start a New Year.  Peace to our world.

Blessings,

Jill

Dhyana:  The Seventh Limb of Yoga
Meditation

In the sixth limb of yoga, Dharana, we cultivate the ability to focus a high level of awareness, or concentration. Dhyana, the seventh limb, is meditation. Although concentration and meditation may appear to be one and the same, a fine line exists between these two stages. Where Dharana practices one-pointed attention, Dhyana is ultimately a state of being keenly aware without focus. Meditation, or contemplation, therefore, is the uninterrupted flow of concentration.

In Dhyana, the mind has been quieted and in the resulting stillness, there are few or no thoughts at all. This state of stillness takes a great deal of strength and stamina to achieve. While it may seem difficult if not impossible, it is important to remember that yoga is a process. Though we may not attain the ultimate desired state of consciousness in every practice, we benefit at every stage of progress. Dhyana is an instrument by which we gain self knowledge, even in the process of trying.

Dhyana is the continuous flow of cognition toward that object.

Resolve to Evolve!
Forget resolutions. Go for meaningful change!

Most of us say it each year:  this is the year I will lose weight, eat healthier, get organized, (fill in the blank). This year will be different.

But alas, often somewhere into early February or sooner, we find ourselves with many of the same habits we had on December 31. Perhaps we need a new approach to make this new year a year for lasting, meaningful change.

Just as we often start yoga classes with an intention, you may2010 new year want to start your new year with a specific intention. To help you along this path, Matthew is offering a two-part practice of setting a year-long intention for transformation. During the practice, he'll move through gentle asana and pranayama to settle your mind and body, then guide you through an extended yoga nidra with a focus on setting sankalpa, or resolution. You'll be given the space and time to set specific, realistic goals to create lasting change and increase your clarity in your decision making.

Release the habitual patterns that cause you to relive the same situations again and again by starting this year with a new intention.

Two new classes!  Two new teachers!
Ashtanga and Early Bird Yoga

Ashtanga Yoga returns to the blue on Mondays from 11:30 am to 1:00 pm. This dynamic practice is designed to heat and energize the body, combining powerful breath with movement and poses in a set sequence. Teaching our new Ashtanga class is Stacy Ingham, who has been practicing Ashtanga since 1998 and teaching in the Triangle for the past nine years.

BlueLotus36_DownDogStacy has focused her studies in the Ashtanga tradition of yoga with David Swensen, Annie Pace, Chuck Miller and Maty Ezrati, and most recently with David Keil and Matthew Sweeney. Her approach as a teacher is to educate students on the joy of a consistent yoga practice, demonstrating how to pay attention to the details of form and philosophy, and making yoga accessible for all levels.

Early Bird Yoga
Wake up the natural way with our new class for the early risers among you. Jill Braly, RYT, will be teaching a 7:00-8:00 am Early Bird Yoga class Tuesdays for a fun and invigorating way to start your day. You'll leave class feeling energized and relaxed, focused and expansive with vitality and energy for your entire day!

Jill practices and teaches yoga as a physical, mental and spiritual guidebook for life. She creates classes that integrate the breath and body to cultivate physical health, a satvic mind and an open heart. Jill trained in India in traditional Hatha Yoga and draws upon a variety of yogic styles and traditions to offer classes that meet the needs of her students, while staying in tune with nature and the seasons.
Yin and Yang:  Integrated Practice
Heather Tiddens leads weekend of focused workshops

boo-tiqueWe practice yoga at home or at a studio on regular basis to reap the many physical and spiritual benefits of yoga. However, there is an additional benefit to occasionally diving deeper into the practice with focused workshops and retreats that allow us to create even greater space in our lives and in our bodies.

We are once again pleased to welcome Heather Tiddens for just such a weekend, January 15 through 18, when she will weave the healing powers of these two very different styles of yoga -- Yin and Yang -- into an integrated, balanced practice. The quiet Yin Yoga practice encourages the body/mind to open as each pose is held passively for several minutes. The Yang practice of deep breathing with intense pose sequences deepens our edges of self-discovery while cultivating strength, flexibility and energy flow. Yoking these mutually supportive yoga styles creates an opportunity for healing the stress and trauma, and their underlying conditioning that block our potential and limit our lives.

Experience the freedom of being fully at home in your body -- energized, open, powerful and graceful.
