Namaste!

When I'm thinking clearly, I recognize that nobody out in Internet land has been pacing the floor wondering with panic, "where is the blue's monthly newsletter?!?!?!?!?"  So it's amazing just how loud the internal voice is that's been shouting at me all day to get it done.

Pressure.  We've all experienced it in various times and measures, from family, friends and work environments.  But for me, there's no harsher drill sergeant, no crueler task master, no unrelenting slave driver more demanding than my own, personal Inner Tyrant.  Maybe you've heard of the Inner Child?  Mine was put down long ago by the voice of She Who Can Get It All Done.

Holiday festivities and end-of-year loose end tying will provide me with endless opportunities to berate myself for not doing enough, not finishing those endless tasks in a timely manner and generally being a slouch.  But it is my plan (goal, hope, wish) that this December, I will finally relieve the Inner Tyrant from her duties as General Manager of the Universe and Creator of My Unhappiness.  I don't imagine she'll go without a fight, but I'm tougher than I look.

Maybe you should do the same.  We can set them all up in a camp somewhere doing Restorative Yoga, getting daily massage, feeding them healthy, wholesome food and invite them back when they can gently guide us in productive lives with a gentler, more compassionate approach. I imagine that will include lots of kudos, and plenty of time for walks in the woods and smelling the flowers...

While you are putting forth so much effort to be kind to the world, turn some of that kindness on yourself this month.  I'm going to give it a shot.

Blessings,

Jill

Dharana:  The Sixth Limb of Yoga
Unwavering concentration

dharanaLast month we explored the fifth limb, Pratyahara, where we direct the senses inward to become aware of the subtle elements of sound, touch, sight, taste and smell. As each limb of yoga prepares us for the next, so Pratyahara (and the previous limbs) prepares us for the sixth limb, Dharana, or concentration. Once we are relieved of outside distractions, we can turn our attention to slowing the thinking process and concentrating on a single mental object. The essential idea is to hold the concentration or focus of attention in one direction. The mind must be stilled in order to achieve this state of complete absorption.

In practicing Dharana we are cultivating the ability to focus a high level of awareness in anything we do because it helps us to stay present in every step. The objective of Dharana is to achieve a mental state where the mind, intellect and ego are controlled. The mind becomes purified by the practices and is able to focus efficiently on one subject or point of experience.

These extended periods of concentration or Dharana naturally lead to the next limb of yoga, meditation, or Dhyana, which we will explore in the January issue.

Dharana is the binding of the mind to one place, object or idea. -- Yoga Sutras, III-1
'Tis the season for heart-centered giving
Try it all year 'round!

It's that time of year when all of the shopping and bustle may give us pause to consider, "is this really what it's all about?" If you start feeling this way and want to balance some of that energy with a gift from the heart, it doesn't take much to create a shift. Just take a moment to breathe, get grounded and have a look around. You'll be surprised at what you can find.
  • Clear the clutter. Those blankets you never use and the coat you wear twice a year could be put to good daily use at a local shelter. Clean out your winter closets now, when the items are needed.
  • Organize a food drive. It could be your book club, your girls' night, your home owners' association meeting, or your office mates. Just invite everyone to bring a non-perishable food item and decide on a charity to receive the gift.
  • If you have a fall garden, "harvest a row for the hungry," and drop the crops at a local shelter, or give your CSA surplus to a shelter.
The best part about this kind of giving is you can do it all year around, and you don't need a special holiday or event to put your ideas into action.
Padma's Peanut Butter Drive
Peanut Butter ... and the Booling Bean Drive

Taking a page from our own book above, the blue will be holding a Peanut Butter and Bean Drive from December 7 - 13 at the studio. Why peanut butter and beans? Well, as one of our own yoginis put it:  "I am seriously concerned that our children in the area are not getting enough to eat. The lack of protein in cheap, starchy food and nitrates in the canned meat give me the heebeegeebees."

All donations of beans, peanut butter and other high protein, high-quality veggie foods (non perishable) will be given to Urban Ministries and the Interfaith Food Shuttle.
