Namaste! I clearly remember it was October 1999 when I first heard the phrase "Expectations are just premeditated resentments." I recall this calendar detail partly because I was attending a residential teacher training program at the time- a memorable experience in general- but even more because of the huge impact that idea had on me. The more I mulled it over, the more I saw just how much expectations were a part of my daily mental life. I began to recognize all the expectations that I (often unconsciously) held of my family, friends, teachers, strangers, and myself. The impossible standards that my mind had created, in the end, resulted in frustration, anger and resentment. I had a LOT of work ahead of me. fast-forward 8+ years While on holiday last week, I was again amazed to find myself in a situation where **WHACK!!!** I was embroiled in the resulting resentment of an unmet expectation. There I was, hoping for a complete escape, total relaxation, a paradise getaway; I opened my eyes to see myself. There with me on vacation. Me, with the luggage I don't need to check-not because it's carry-on size, but because its vastness travels with me everywhere I go. Yet another pithy phrase came to mind: "Wherever you go, there you are." Sigh. There are times on the path when you can clearly see progress. You watch old ways of being fall away. You step outside yourself and see a more patient, humble, compassionate, kind you emerging. Other times, it's good to remember that there's no "getting there" and for the work ahead, we could perhaps remove our impossible expectations of perfection, and be just a little more kind to ourselves and to the world. One last catchy phrase for you.
It's my new mantra:
I am a work in progress. Peace, Jill
