Namaste!
I don't know who said it (besides somebody's father) but there's a reason you have one mouth and two ears: listen more than you speak.
So what makes a good listener?
#1 keep your mouth shut #2 stop everything else you are doing and devote your undivided attention to the speaker #3 don't formulate an answer or response WHILE the other person is talking.
I've been working on these for a while, and am getting pretty good. So now what I am trying to learn is how to better listen to myself-whether it's taking my own best advice or listening in for the wise voice of intuition. I'm still working on the short how-to list, but this is what I've got so far:
#1 sit down and be quiet #2 stop everything else you are doing and focus your attention #3 don't try to formulate an answer.
Simple, right? Stillness. Focused attention. Letting go of effort. Yoga helps take us to the part of ourselves that knows better. Pausing to listen, we find that we already do have the answers we seek.
Peace, Jill

Yoga Immersion & Teacher Training |
|
I remember last December when Matthew and I were sitting around after class discussing the possibility of facilitating a 40-day early morning practice at blue lotus. At the time, I envisioned just the two of us spinning and chanting and meditating every day. Was I ever surprised and pleased to be joined daily by about 20 others who were intrigued by what could happen in 40 days of commited practice.
This idea has come back around in a bigger way as the yoga immersion and teacher training program that has been developing in the back room of my brain for the past four years comes to light in December.
Not just for aspiring teachers, but anyone who is curious to dive deeper into the amazing and transformative practice of yoga, we are thrilled to offer this opportunity to the blue community.
Read more on the website or join us for an information session at 6:00 pm, Sunday, August 24 at the blue. |
More Morning Yoga! |
|
The general thinking in the world of yoga is that morning is really the best time to practice. It's a great way to open up and start your day with a clear mind, energized body, and calm and open spirit. At the blue, we've added two new morning classes to make it easier for you to reap these benefits.
Julee Snyder, a new blue instructor, brings a world of experience to the new Gentle Flow class, 9:30 to 11:00 am, Thursdays. And our longtime, much-loved instructor Yvonne Cropp guides Flow & Stretch, 9:30 to 11:00 am, Tuesdays.
Read more about Julee and Yvonne, and register for their classes at the online Web Scheduler. |

We've all been there. You're in the middle of practice, and this fantastic song begins to play. What is it? Who is the artist? I need to remember to ask the instructor. And then right back to the asana and being in that moment. In your post-class, yoga-blissed state, you forget to ask. Check out your favorite yoginis favorite playlists. Pick up singles on I-Tunes or entire cds ( on sale now) at the studio. Fun Friday with Carrington

Join us at 6:30 pm, Saturday, August 16, and bring your favorite veggie dish. Then sit back and enjoy the flick.
Chitra's Spicy Potatoes, Peas and Carrots A crowd-pleaser from the monthly veggie potluck, shared with us by Chitra Balachandran.
Ingredients 3 Tbsp oil 1 Tbsp cumin seed 2 med onions, red or white, diced into small pieces ½ tsp turmeric salt to taste ¾ - 1 tsp red chili powder or crushed red pepper; less if you want it less spicy 2-3 carrots; peeled and cut into small pieces ¾ c peas 4 med potatoes; peeled, boiled and chopped 1 ½ Tbsp coriander seeds, powdered ¾ tsp aamchur (dry mango powder) or substitute by adding a little lemon juice to the vegetables at the end Fresh cilantro, a good couple of handfuls, chopped well
Preparation Heat 2 Tbsp oil in pan. When oil is hot, add cumin seeds and let it sizzle (don't let the cumin burn). Add onions and saute for a few minutes. Add turmeric, salt and chili powder, and saute for a few minutes. Add carrots and peas and saute well (you can put a lid on the pan and let the carrots and peas cook); stir occasionally so that the veggies don't burn. After the carrots/peas are cooked, add the diced potatoes and mix well.
Add the coriander powder and aamchur to the vegetables. (If you don't have aamchur, just add the powdered coriander seeds.) Mix well and if needed, add another 1-2 Tbsp oil. Cover and let it cook over medium heat. Do a taste check - and add more salt, chili powder and/or coriander powder, aamchur as needed. Turn the vegetables over from time to time so that they don't burn. (If you did not add aamchur earlier, add a little lemon juice - say about 1 Tbsp..or more as required to taste...at this point.) Mix well and remove pan from flame after all the vegetables and spices have blended well. Garnish with lots of chopped fresh cilantro. Notes Coriander seeds, cumin seeds, turmeric, chili powder and aamchur can be found in all the local Indian stores (coriander and cumin can be found in the local grocery stores as well). Chili powder is made by powdering dried red, hot peppers (it is really spicy). Wash your hands well if it gets on your hands. You can use coriander powder that is also available in the local grocery stores, but my experience is that the flavor diminishes with time. So I prefer to powder the seeds just before using them for maximum flavor. |
