SEPTEMBER/OCTOBER  2008
A SIGN OF THE TIMES

A Black man has been nominated by the Democratic Party as their candidate to run for President of the United States.

I thought of my father and how proud he would have been.  I thought of all those who have gone before and what this would have meant to them.  We should all rejoice in all that has come before . . . the "shoulders" we have stood on and continue to stand on . . . all the heartaches, pains and sufferings and rejoice with this wonderful blessing!

As I look at celebrating "Something of Value's" 17th anniversary in December, I too need your support.  One sign of the times is the economic plight of the nation.  Many businesses are failing and some are those we thought were strong and would always be here including financial institutions.

We too face uncertainty.  While we are the largest retail store featuring items reflecting African Americans, we need your support if we are to stay in business.

How can you help "Something of Value"?  Stop by and buy something.  We have items starting as low as $3.00.  So, stop by.  Don't even plan to find a parking place in front . . . it will be a long shot . . . go ahead and park a block away in any direction and take a leisurely stroll to see us.

We have seen similar Black businesses fail over the past 10 years.  Many of us can recall the times when there were abundant black businesses in our community.  Our community can't just "want" us to stay around . . . our community can't believe that "others" will shop with us.  Our community must patronize Black businesses if it wants us to continue to exist.

To those who continually support us, thank you.

We have designed our newsletter to bring important information to you not only about what we are doing at "Something of Value", but also what is happening in the community.

If we are important and if you want to see us continue to be around, support us with your business.

Call, stop by, drop us a line.  Let us know how we are doing. If you have suggestions for merchandise, articles for the newsletter, let us know.  We are here for you . . . we came into existence for you and will only remain with your support.

As we say farewell to the "dog days" of summer and prepare to welcome fall and winter, the Something of Value staff are getting ready to have new merchandise for you, your home and gift selections for the upcoming holiday season!

Over the next three months, please look for special "Holiday" newsletters.  Remember, the "Holidays" will be upon us before you know it. Something Of Value carries all of your special gift selections (Ebony Visions, Annie Lee, etc., cards, ornaments, ....). Please remember to consider us first when beginning your holiday shopping.

If you haven't stopped by in awhile, we have missed you. Stop by, tell your friends about us and better yet, bring a friend with you. Ample parking is always available in the lot (the Pak n Save parking lot) at 40th & San Pablo. Something of Value is less than one block away, and it is a great way to add to your exercise program (take the leisurely stroll to the shop).

Thank you,
