Old North St. Louis Screening Series
Old North Screening Series| Tomorrow, Sept 24th | 7:30pm | Old North St. Louis Restoration Group | 2700 N. 14th St. (half-block south and across the street from Crown Candy)

Appropriately, on the same day Gateway Arch the film screens, the jury will announce the winner of the competition to redesign the Arch's grounds. "The Gateway Arch: A Reflection of America" (2006, 60 min.) - directed by Scott Huegerich and Bob Miano, the team responsible for "The World's Greatest Fair" - explores the iconic, internationally renowned monument that has come to signify and define St. Louis. This award-winning, locally produced film charts the entire history of St. Louis' riverfront, including the first settlers, the dedication of the Jefferson Memorial site, and the conceptualization and building of the Gateway Arch. The film will be followed by a Q&A with co-directors Miano and Huegerich.

Future films in the series will include documentaries that focus on issues of concern or interest to the area; fiction films with particular appeal to neighborhood population; family-friendly films; and relevant locally produced works. In addition, Cinema St. Louis will offer special presentations of films from the St. Louis International Film Festival, both during the November festival and throughout the year. Whenever possible, guests will accompany the film, including both filmmakers and experts who will lead post-screening discussions of issues raised by the films.

The Old North Screening Series is made possible through a $10,000 grant from Kresge Arts in St. Louis, a partnership of the Kresge Foundation, the Arts and Education Council and the Greater Saint Louis Community Foundation in St. Louis. The program challenges communities to use art and culture as a tool to address broader community issues and uses Baltimore, Detroit, and St. Louis as the pilot sites. Cinema St. Louis was one of 10 local organizations to receive grants for 2010.

dariusDarius Goes West

In this multi-award-winning documentary, Darius Weems, a 15-year-old living with Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy, leaves home for the first time in his life with eleven of his best friends.  The rowdy crew sets a course for California, hoping to convince MTV to customize Darius's wheelchair on the hit show, Pimp My Ride.   The result is a testament to the idealism of today's youth, and a vivid portrayal of adventure, brotherhood, and the character it takes to shed light on an uncertain future.  Part revolution, part revelation, this film proves how life, even when imperfect, is always worth the ride.  (Running time: 94 minutes)

TLACult.com Launches Short Film Contest

TLACult.com to award cash prizes to the best cult, horror and exploitation short film submission

TLACult.com (www.tlacult.com), an online and direct mail DVD and VOD entertainment retailer specializing in unusual cult, horror and exploitation cinema, will launch the TLACult.com 2010 Short Film Contest. Short filmmakers are encouraged to submit their homemade cult, horror or exploitation movies to TLA's corporate office in Philadelphia where four members of TLA's web content department will screen the films in order to find the best and most unusual short films out there. Then they will choose 20 finalists whose work will appear using the site's Streaming Video service for devoted genre fans to screen and vote for their favorites.

"We're looking for the weird, the wacky, the cheesy, the terrifying, the fiercely original.... We love genre movies here at TLA and we love seeing work whose creativity shines through despite the budgetary restrictions that short filmmakers have to face. If it's trashy, we want it for our contest. If it's bloody, we want it for our contest. If it's totally off-the-wall weird we want it for our contest," said Dan Reed, Managing Editor of TLACult.com.

To submit a film, interested parties must visit www.TLACult.com/ShortsEntry2010 to print a copy of the submission form which should be enclosed along with a DVD copy of the submission. All submissions are due in by November 1st, 2010. Submissions should be under 20 minutes in length and not currently available on any commercial DVDs or pay-per-view sites. Submissions will not be returned to the filmmakers. The 20 finalists will be notified at least 24 hours prior to the contest's official launch on December 1, 2010. TLACult.com customers will be encouraged to vote for their favorite selections before January 1st, 2011, when the prize winners will be announced.

"We are very excited to launch this contest. There are thousands of filmmakers out there making unique and crazy genre movies every year that, for whatever reason, only a very limited selection of people get to see, and even more cult movie fans hungry to watch them. With this contest, the filmmakers get exposure for their work they wouldn't get otherwise, and the fans get access to some truly unique movies. Plus, what struggling filmmaker couldn't use $1,000? Needless to say, we can't wait to see the submissions that come in. Personally, I'm hoping for something involving sexy ninjas doing battle with a trash monster," added Reed.

TLA Entertainment offers the very best in home entertainment offering a vast catalog of movies for every type of consumer, from quirky Independent cinema to outstanding Cult & Horror movies to Gay & Lesbian films and the hottest in both Straight and Gay adult entertainment.
