Leaders aim to awaken community, improve opportunities for black youth Black leaders Geoffrey Canada and Marian Wright Edelman visited The Skillman Foundation recently as part of their national tour. The leaders urged grantees and participants in the Foundation's Good Neighborhoods program to "come together to stop the backward slide of our children." Read more. The Skillman Foundation is a Gold award winner for excellence in communication in the 2011 Wilmer Shields Rich Awards Program, sponsored by the Council on Foundations. The award recognizes the Foundation's 2009 Tough Boys annual report.
Olympic pursuit: Students discover success, history in 10th annual event The questions in the 10th annual African Centered Olympics require Detroit students to know details about black activists, athletes and artists. The results offer more than a chance at winning, but an opportunity to learn more about themselves. Read more. Roundtable on teen safety set for March 30 High school students and teachers will share their unheard stories as part of a teen safety roundtable discussion, facilitated by Ambassador Publisher Denise Ilitch, The Skillman Foundation and presented by the City of Detroit's Forum of Youth on Violence. The event is at 10 a.m. March 30 at Michigan State University, Detroit Center, 3408 Woodward Ave., Detroit. Read more. Save the date: Kids Matter Here Summit II The Skillman Foundation is honoring founder Rose Skillman's legacy and celebrating its 50th anniversary with the Kids Matter Here Summit II on April 30 at Ford Field. The day will include updates on the Foundation's Good Neighborhoods and Good schools work, food, music, information on excellent schools and preparing children for college, and Skillman's family of Detroit nonprofits.
